Numerical study on the approach for super-high thermal efficiency in a gasoline homogeneous charge compression ignition lean-burn engine

Hao Yu et al.

Summary: The study investigated achieving super-high thermal efficiency in a gasoline homogeneous charge compression ignition lean-burn engine through numerical simulation. A model engine was designed based on split cycles, and a cooperative control strategy involving load, oxygen, exhaust gas recirculation, and compression ratio was proposed to optimize thermal efficiency and clarify the interactive mechanism.

Piston Bowl Geometry Effects on Gasoline Compression Ignition in a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine

Meng Tang et al.

Summary: A design optimization campaign was conducted to search for improved combustion profiles in a heavy-duty diesel engine with a compression ratio of 17.3, using a large-scale design of experiments approach and computational fluid dynamics simulations. The optimization focused on geometric features, injector specifications, and swirl motion, with stepped-lip bowls proving to be the optimum design for enhancing fuel-air mixing and reducing emissions. Re-entrant bowls performed worse compared to the baseline design across different load conditions.

Development of a New Hybrid Stochastic/Trajectory Droplet Collision Model for Spray Simulations in Internal Combustion Engines

Shaoyi Suo et al.

Summary: A new hybrid stochastic/trajectory (HST) droplet collision model was developed for simulating spray processes in engines, combining stochastic and trajectory methods. The model considers the number of droplets represented by each parcel, uses an adaptive collision cell technique, and updates the formula for selecting collision pairs to accurately reproduce the spatial distribution of droplets after collision. The HST model is capable of satisfactorily reproducing spray morphology, collision frequency, and Sauter mean diameter of droplets, and shows good independence on computational grid size, time step, and parcel number.
