Highly Transparent and Mechanically Robust Energy-harvestable Piezocomposite with Embedded 1D P(VDF-TrFE) Nanofibers and Single-walled Carbon Nanotubes

Kiyong Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, a highly transparent, flexible, and ultrathin piezocomposite was fabricated by embedding electrospun poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) nanofibers and aerosol-synthesized single-walled carbon nanotubes in an elastomer matrix. The piezoelectric layer of the piezocomposite was composed of the poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) nanofiber mat, while the transparent conductive electrode was formed by a single-walled carbon nanotube film. The use of these one-dimensional nanomaterials resulted in a piezocomposite with high transparency, low diffusion of light, and enhanced mechanical properties. Additionally, the combination of the piezo- and flexoelectricity exhibited by the electrospun nanofibers and the acid-doping effect on the single-walled carbon nanotubes significantly improved the kinetic energy-harvesting performance, with a maximum output voltage of 26.8 V. Moreover, the employed electrospinning and aerosol chemical vapor deposition methods are simple, scalable, and cost-effective, which are expected to accelerate the development of industrially feasible next-generation wearable electronics.

Bhavana Joshi et al.

Summary: In this study, flexible piezoelectric nanogenerator devices were fabricated by supersonically spraying ZnOembedded PVDF composite films. The presence of ZnO significantly increased the beta-phase within PVDF, leading to enhanced generated charges. The effective piezoelectric coefficient and open-circuit voltage of the PVDF/ZnO composite were higher than those of pure PVDF, demonstrating the pivotal role of ZnO in increasing the beta-phase and improving the electromechanical performance. The energy harvesting capability of the composite was demonstrated using 33 light-emitting diodes.

Summary: With the continuous advancement of electronic devices, lightweight, flexible, and easily processable materials have gained substantial importance. Polymer-based piezoelectric materials, such as poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), are in great demand for various applications. However, the low electrical conductivity and dielectric permittivity of PVDF limit its performance. Therefore, researchers have focused on incorporating conductive nanofillers into the PVDF matrix to improve its properties, leading to promising results.
