A Review: Anomaly-Based versus Full-Field-Based Weather Analysis and Forecasting

Weihong Qian et al.

Summary: Comparisons between anomaly and full-field methods in weather analysis and forecasting have shown the superiority of anomaly in areas such as weather system depiction, forecasting, diagnostic parameters, and model prediction. Anomaly weather maps offer advantages including clearer depictions of weather systems, easier observation of temporal and spatial evolution, and simplification of conceptual models. It is emphasized that anomaly forecasts are valuable for raising awareness of potential societal impacts and combining them with ensembles can enhance predictive capabilities. Additionally, diagnostic parameters and model predictions have shown positive contributions from anomalous fields. Anomaly global models have also proven useful for seasonal forecasts.

A new threshold free dust storm detection index based on MODIS reflectance and thermal bands

Atefeh Jebali et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a new Dust Storm Detection Index (DSDI) without the need for different thresholds for each event. By analyzing spectral and thermal properties, a suitable relationship was established for separating land surfaces and clouds of dust particles. The significant correlation between DSDI and horizontal visibility confirmed the success of this algorithm in detecting storms in the arid study area.
