A remote sensing-based method for daily evapotranspiration mapping and partitioning in a poorly gauged basin with arid ecosystems in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Wenbin Zhu et al.

Summary: This study proposes a daily scale framework for continuous evapotranspiration (ET) mapping and partitioning based on a universal solution of the traditional Ts-VI models. By transforming the Ts-VI feature space, the framework allows for ET estimation and partitioning that are only related to the boundary conditions at the pixel scale. The framework is demonstrated in Qaidam Basin, China, using MODIS products, and the results show the advantages of the universal Ts-VI model in capturing spatial details and temporal variations accurately.

A Long-Term Simulation of Land Surface Conditions at High Resolution over Continental China

Peng Ji et al.

Summary: By conducting simulations with a resolution of 6 kilometers over China, it is found that high-resolution land surface modeling has lower simulation errors for snow depth, evapotranspiration, and soil moisture compared to global products. It can also accurately simulate urban heat islands and long-term trends. This highlights the significant added value of high-resolution land surface modeling at continental scales.

Simulation of dew point temperature in different time scales based on grasshopper algorithm optimized extreme gradient boosting

Jianhua Dong et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the ability of a new machine learning model to estimate dew point temperature and compared it with two other models. The results showed that the new model performed best in terms of accuracy and stability. The actual vapor pressure was found to be the most practical input. Additionally, the study found that the models performed similarly at hourly and daily scales, but the hourly scale was better for evaluating simulations in extreme situations.

Increased drought effects on the phenology of autumn leaf senescence

Chaoyang Wu et al.

Summary: Global warming has delayed the autumn date of foliar senescence (DFS) in recent decades, which has positive implications for growing season length and global carbon storage. However, warming-associated drought may stimulate earlier DFS due to water limitation. This study uses ground observations and satellite data to show the increased impact of drought on DFS, linking it to decreased precipitation under warming and weaker drought resistance in plants with different functional traits. An improved set of phenology models based on these findings suggests earlier DFS by the end of the century, especially in high latitude areas.

Near-Surface Warming Reduces Dew Frequency in China

Youjun Dou et al.

Summary: Long-term observations from 1961 to 2010 at 597 stations in China show a decrease in dew frequency by 5.2 days per decade due to near-surface warming and decreases in relative humidity. The decline in dew frequency is more significant in arid regions compared to humid regions. There has been a substantial decrease in mean dew frequency in China, particularly in humid, semihumid, and arid regions, with surface warming in arid regions leading to larger decreases in surface relative humidity and reduced likelihood of dew events.

Summary: This study found that from 1955 to 2020, absolute humidity in Australia remained relatively constant, while relative humidity decreased by approximately -1% per decade on average. Summary: This article proposed machine learning-based models to estimate spatially continuous daily RHns at 1 km resolution over Japan and South Korea under all sky conditions. XGBoost produced slightly better performance than RF, and the spatially continuous RHns model combined based on XGBoost yielded a coefficient of determination of 0.72 and a root-mean-square error of 10.61%. The spatiotemporal patterns of the estimated RHns agreed with in situ observations, reflecting the effect of topography on RHns.
