Wei Wei et al.

Summary: The Variscan foreland basin in Belgium and the Netherlands has potential targets for shale gas exploration based on the composition and deposition conditions of the sedimentary rocks. The area near the Variscan mountains has higher potential for gas generation and storage, while areas further away have limited potential.

An indication of salt caprock failed integrity in inclusion records: Dongpu depression, bohai bay basin, China

Xiuyan Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the integrity of salt caprocks in the Paleogene strata of the Dongpu Depression, China, using optical methods. Fluid inclusion analysis and basin modeling revealed multiple fracturing and healing processes within the caprocks, as well as the presence of oil inclusions. The study found that oil inclusions were formed during the secondary hydrocarbon generation stage approximately 6.6 million years ago, and the salt caprocks failed due to overpressure. The fluorescence color of oil inclusions was found to be misleading when determining their thermal maturity, highlighting the need for submicron scale analytical methods for inclusion examination.

East Asian lake hydrology modulated by global sea-level variations in the Eocene warmhouse

Yiquan Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates four terrestrial basins in mid-latitudes of East Asia, refining the cyclostratigraphy of the middle-late Eocene and deciphering high-resolution lake hydrological changes. It reveals that lake-level changes were influenced by global climate changes, and global sea-level variations may drive hydroclimate and freshwater resources in East Asia during the Eocene.

Effect of paleoclimate and paleoenvironment on organic matter accumulation in lacustrine shale: Constraints from lithofacies and element geochemistry in the northern Qaidam Basin, NW China

Haihai Hou et al.

Summary: The enrichment of organic matter in lacustrine shale is significantly influenced by paleoclimate and paleoenvironment conditions. Different lithofacies types and geochemical parameters in the shale samples from the Qaidam Basin provide insights into the depositional environments and organic matter accumulation mechanisms. Organic matter content in the shale samples is primarily controlled by detritus input in shallow freshwater lakes under wet and hot paleoclimate conditions, and by anoxic processes in deep saline lakes under arid and cold paleoclimate conditions.

Ahmed Khaled et al.

Summary: The Cuizhuang Formation dark shale in the Yuncheng Basin is considered a potential petroleum source rock, where organic matter enrichment is influenced by quartz and clay minerals. The shale has relatively high TOC content, organic matter maturity, and is characterized by type I kerogen, deposited in a passive continental margin setting.

Summary: This study explored the organic mudstone accumulation patterns by integrating various paleoenvironmental indices and classified mudstones based on their composition and sedimentary structures. The Paleocene East China Sea Basin shows evidence of sedimentary differentiation and two distinct accumulation patterns: closed-lacustrine and open-marine, providing insights into the ancient environment.

A re-assessment and calibration of redox thresholds in the Permian Lucaogou Formation of the Malang Sag, Santanghu Basin, Northwest China

Yongshuai Pan et al.

Summary: The study re-evaluates and calibrates commonly used redox proxies in the Permian Lucaogou Formation, finding that fixed thresholds may not be fully applicable and need calibration within the covariation theory framework. Some bimetal ratios are especially useful for redox analysis of the formation, while other proxies yield spurious results. Calibration of thresholds is necessary to avoid erroneous redox interpretations, as deposits of the formation reveal a complex history of rapid transitions between suboxic and euxinic conditions.

The Shahejie Formation in the Dongpu Depression, Bohai Bay Basin, China: Geochemical investigation of the origin, deposition and preservation of organic matter in a saline lacustrine environment during the Middle Eocene

Tianyu Zheng et al.

Summary: This study presents a new set of geochemical, petrographical, and mineralogical data obtained from the Eocene Shahejie Formation in the Bohai Bay, Eastern China. The research focuses on understanding the organic matter precursor material, thermal maturity, and paleoenvironment during the deposition of different members within the Eocene Shahejie Formation. The findings reveal variable biomarker assemblages and depositional environments, providing insights into the complex sedimentary history of the formation.

Summary: This study examines the factors controlling organic matter (OM) enrichment in lacustrine fine-grained rocks of the Jurassic Da'anzhai Member in the central Sichuan Basin. The results suggest that OM accumulation is mainly controlled by clastic input and sedimentation rate. The study also highlights the potential of siliceous shale as a lithology for unconventional hydrocarbon production in this region.
