Chapter 1: Evaluation of kidney function in patients undergoing anticancer drug therapy, from clinical practice guidelines for the management of kidney injury during anticancer drug therapy 2022

Satoru Muto et al.

Summary: The prevalence of CKD may be higher in cancer patients due to the addition of cancer-specific risk factors to those already present for CKD. Evaluation of kidney function in patients undergoing anticancer drug therapy is important for setting drug doses, detecting kidney disease associated with cancer and its treatment, and obtaining baseline values for monitoring. Different estimation formulas have been developed, but their suitability for evaluating GFR in cancer patients remains a clinical question.

Chronic comorbid conditions among adult cancer survivors in the United States: Results from the National Health Interview Survey, 2002-2018

Changchuan Jiang et al.

Summary: The study revealed an increasing trend in the prevalence of chronic diseases among adult cancer survivors in the United States, with a substantial increase in the number of survivors with comorbid illnesses over the past 2 decades. Additionally, the prevalence of MCC was more pronounced among survivors aged 18 to 44 years.

Validation of a Predictive Model for New Baseline Renal Function After Radical Nephrectomy or Robot-Assisted Partial Nephrectomy in Japanese Patients

Hidekazu Tachibana et al.

Summary: The study validated a new simple equation that accurately predicts the glomerular filtration rate after radical and robot-assisted laparoscopic partial nephrectomies in Japanese patients. This model helps physicians in choosing surgical treatments for renal tumors in daily clinical practice.

Long-Term Renal Function Following Radical Cystectomy for Bladder Cancer

Summary: This study evaluates long-term renal function following radical cystectomy for bladder cancer and identifies risk factors associated with postoperative decline in renal function. The findings suggest that recognizing preoperative risk factors can help minimize renal insufficiency after surgery.

Onconephrology: The intersections between the kidney and cancer

Mitchell H. Rosner et al.

Summary: Onconephrology is a new subspecialty of nephrology focusing on the intersections of kidney disease with cancer, emphasizing the impact of kidney disease on treatment outcomes in cancer patients. Collaborative care between oncologists and nephrologists is crucial in recognizing and treating kidney disease in this patient population.

New Baseline Renal Function after Radical or Partial Nephrectomy: A Simple and Accurate Predictive Model

Diego Aguilar Palacios et al.

Summary: The study developed and validated a simplified equation to predict new baseline glomerular filtration rate in patients with renal cell carcinoma undergoing radical nephrectomy or partial nephrectomy. The equation demonstrated high correlation and accuracy in both internal and external validation cohorts, accurately predicting postoperative glomerular filtration rate above a certain threshold.

Cumulative cancer incidence and mortality after kidney transplantation in Japan: A long-term multicenter cohort study

Ryoichi Imamura et al.

Summary: Kidney transplantation is a promising treatment for end-stage kidney disease, but cancer remains a leading cause of death in recipients. Factors such as immunosuppressants, older recipient age, longer dialysis duration before transplantation, and transfusion history are associated with increased cancer risk. Older age and longer dialysis duration are predictors of worse cancer-specific survival rates in kidney transplant recipients.

Kidney Function after Treatment for Childhood Cancer: A Report from the St. Jude Lifetime Cohort Study

Daniel M. Green et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the prevalence of impaired kidney function and identified factors associated with increased odds for kidney impairment in adult survivors of childhood cancer diagnosed ?10 years earlier. About 2.1% of survivors had stages 3?5 CKD, with factors such as treatment with certain chemotherapy agents and kidney irradiation volume contributing to the risk.

Physical Comorbidities and Depression in Recent and Long-Term Adult Cancer Survivors: NHANES 2007-2018

Dafina Petrova et al.

Summary: Most cancer patients have one or more physical comorbidities, which may increase the risk of developing depression. A study of 2073 adult cancer survivors found that the number of physical comorbidities present at the time of cancer diagnosis was associated with a higher risk of reporting depression, especially among breast cancer survivors. This suggests that information about comorbidities could be useful in identifying and preventing depression in cancer patients and survivors.
