Climate response to the spatial and temporal evolutions of anthropogenic aerosol forcing

Hai Wang et al.

Summary: The study compared the large-scale climate responses to anthropogenic aerosols and greenhouse gas forcing from 1930 to 2010, revealing different patterns of impact based on the spatial and temporal changes. While greenhouse gas forcing dominated climate change in the twentieth century, anthropogenic aerosols played a significant role in shaping regional climate changes, particularly in the latter half of the century. The shifting patterns of aerosol emissions from different regions led to distinct climate responses, with effects opposite to those induced by greenhouse gases.

Twentieth-century Azores High expansion unprecedented in the past 1,200 years

Nathaniel Cresswell-Clay et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that anthropogenic climate change has caused the expansion of the Azores High over the North Atlantic, disrupting precipitation patterns in western Europe. Particularly in winter, the expanded Azores High has resulted in drought conditions in the western Mediterranean region.

Global Changes in Water Vapor 1979-2020

Richard P. Allan et al.

Summary: Global-scale changes in water vapor and its response to surface temperature variability since 1979 were evaluated using a range of observations and simulations. The results show that global water vapor has increased, but coupled simulations overestimate the changes. However, the response of water vapor to surface temperature variability is consistent across different data sets.

Ralf Doscher et al.

Summary: EC-Earth3 is a Earth system model contributing to CMIP6, featuring a flexible coupling framework, various model configurations, ensuring simulations comparability across different HPC systems, and demonstrating improved physical and dynamic features. It represents a clear step forward for European community ESM with improved physical performance compared to CMIP5 version.

Historical Changes in Surface Soil Moisture Over the Contiguous United States: An Assessment of CMIP6

Shanshui Yuan et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the surface soil moisture in the contiguous United States using simulations from the Sixth Phase of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP6), showing significant wetting trends in certain regions. Compared to CMIP5, CMIP6 more accurately captures soil moisture variations, although there is still some variability among individual models within CMIP6.

Summary: HadCRUT5 is a new version of a global surface temperature data set, incorporating sea-surface temperature and land near-surface air temperature measurements. Two variants are produced for different applications, with the combination of revised input data sets and statistical analysis resulting in greater warming of the global average over the entire record period.

The ERA5 global reanalysis: Preliminary extension to 1950

Bill Bell et al.

Summary: The extension of the ERA5 reanalysis back to 1950 improves the previously published segment covering 1979 to the present by assimilating more traditional observations and utilizing early satellite data. The global surface temperature anomalies and precipitation variability show high correlations with observations, despite significant differences in representing specific regions. Areas for improvement include assimilating tropical cyclone data and enhancing the representation of surface temperatures over Australia.

Future surface temperatures over Europe according to CMIP6 climate projections: an analysis with original and bias-corrected data

D. Carvalho et al.

Summary: According to CMIP6 future climate projections, the mean, maximum, and minimum surface temperature over Europe are all projected to increase, particularly in northern and southernmost latitudes. Hot days and tropical nights are expected to increase in southern Europe, while frost days are expected to decrease towards the end of the century across Europe.

Using Climate Model Simulations to Constrain Observations

Benjamin D. Santer et al.

Summary: The study compares atmospheric temperature changes in CMIP5 and CMIP6 model ensembles with satellite data, revealing discrepancies in tropical behavior and anomalous covariance behavior in observational datasets. The findings suggest a systematic bias in satellite tropospheric temperature trends or an overestimate of observed atmospheric moistening signals. Further research is needed to determine the credibility of these interpretations.
