Evaluation of the seasonality and spatial aspects of the Southern Annular Mode in CMIP6 models

Xiaoqi Zhang et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the simulation skills of the Southern Annular Mode (SAM) pattern for CMIP6 models using both Atmospheric Model Intercomparison Project (AMIP) and historical experiments. Results indicate that overall skill of AMIP simulation is higher than historical simulation, with varying skill levels across seasons, and the simulation of SAM's asymmetric part plays a key role in simulating the spatial pattern of SAM.

Intermodel Diversity of Simulated Long-term Changes in the Austral Winter Southern Annular Mode: Role of the Southern Ocean Dipole

Fei Zheng et al.

Summary: The Southern Annular Mode (SAM) is crucial in regulating Southern Hemisphere circulation, and models show variation in simulating its long-term changes. A study on SAM trends in CMIP5 models suggests that extratropical sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies, such as the Southern Ocean Dipole (SOD), play a role in influencing the SAM trend. Models with a strong SOD-SAM relationship tend to better simulate the SAM trend, indicating the importance of improving the simulation of this relationship for accurately representing long-term SAM changes.

Reconstructing atmospheric circulation and sea-ice extent in the West Antarctic over the past 200 years using data assimilation

Quentin Dalaiden et al.

Summary: By reconstructing the climate variability of the past two centuries in the West Antarctic sector, this study reveals long-term trends, such as the reduction of sea ice in the Bellingshausen-Amundsen Sea sector starting around 1850 and the strengthening and eastward shift of the Amundsen Sea Low pressure after 1950. The study also shows that the sea-ice variations in the Ross Sea sector are strongly related to the Amundsen Sea Low pressure variability over the past two centuries, including recent trends, while the link between ASL and sea-ice in the Bellingshausen-Amundsen Sea sector changes with time, becoming stronger in recent decades.

Emergence of Southern Hemisphere stratospheric circulation changes in response to ozone recovery

Brian Zambri et al.

Summary: The recovery of the Antarctic ozone hole has led to significant changes in the circulation and temperature of the Southern Hemisphere stratosphere, with trends showing the opposite of those seen during the period of ozone depletion in the late 20th century. The observed differences in stratospheric trends between the recovery and depletion periods are statistically significant.
