Long-term trend analysis in annual, seasonal and monthly rainfall in East Northeast of Brazil and the influence of modes of climate variability

Assessment and characterization of the monthly probabilities of rainfall in Midwest Brazil using different goodness-of-fit tests as probability density functions selection criteria

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of different goodness-of-fit tests for monthly rainfall data in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil and establishes criteria for selecting suitable tests. The Cramer-von Misses and Anderson-Darling tests are the most rigorous in rejecting unsuitable probability density functions (PDFs), while the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is the least rigorous. The use of stricter tests like CVM results in a 60% reduction in the number of suitable series, but KS test series produce inaccurate estimates. The gamma distribution is the most suitable PDF for total monthly rainfall, with exponential and Generalized Extreme Values (GEV) being suitable for dry and rainy periods respectively. The PDF parameters are influenced by geographical variables such as the South Atlantic Subtropical Anticyclone and the orographic effect.

A generalized framework for quantifying and monitoring the severity of meteorological drought

Summary: The current study proposes a new framework for quantifying and monitoring the severity of meteorological drought. It consists of three phases involving the computation using K-component Gaussian Mixture Distribution (GMD), dissimilarity matrix-based clustering using C-index and Monte Carlo Feature-based Selection (MCFS) method, and the application of Markov chain and Bayesian estimation. The framework is validated using data from 52 meteorological stations in Pakistan for a period of 49 years. The outcomes provide insight into quantifying and monitoring meteorological drought comprehensively and accurately.

Assessment of drought variability using SPEI under observed and projected climate scenarios over Uttar Pradesh, India

Aridity indices to assess desertification susceptibility: a methodological approach using gridded climate data and cartographic modeling

Transpiration and growth responses by Eucalyptus species to progressive soil drying

Homogeneity and trend analysis of rainfall and droughts over Southeast Australia

Extreme rainfall events over Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil: Characterization using probability distribution functions and clustering analysis
