Rodent Models of Dilated Cardiomyopathy and Heart Failure for Translational Investigations and Therapeutic Discovery

Matteo Ponzoni et al.

Summary: To improve the development of new therapeutic strategies for heart failure, preclinical models that accurately emulate the human condition are necessary. Rodent models of heart failure provide a strategic compromise between similarity to human in vivo conditions and the ability to conduct numerous experiments and explore various therapeutic candidates. This review summarizes currently available rodent models of heart failure, including their physiopathological basis, development timeline, and specific clinical features. It also provides a detailed overview of the advantages and possible drawbacks of each model to facilitate future investigation planning in the field of heart failure.

MILESTONE: More Than 1,200 Children Bridged to Heart Transplantation with Mechanical Circulatory Support

Karthik Thangappan et al.

Summary: Pediatric mechanical circulatory support (MCS) has been successfully used to bridge children to heart transplantation, improving their chances of survival and transplant success. Over the past 15 years, pediatric MCS has become widely accepted and associated with improved end-organ function and post-transplant survival.

Pulmonary Artery Banding for Dilated Cardiomyopathy in Children: Returning to the Bench from Bedside

Matteo Ponzoni et al.

Summary: Current treatment options for children with end-stage dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) include heart transplantation and mechanical support devices, but these options have limitations. Pulmonary artery banding (PAB) has been reinvented as a regenerative surgery to improve left ventricular function in children with DCM, but its biological mechanisms are still unknown. This review summarizes the clinical, functional, and molecular aspects of PAB and suggests the need for further evidence-based research to support its wider adoption.

Surgical strategies for the management of end-stage heart failure in infants and children: A 15-year experience with a patient-tailored approach

Matteo Ponzoni et al.

Summary: A patient-tailored surgical protocol was described for managing end-stage heart failure in pediatric patients, with a combination of pulmonary artery banding and different types of ventricular assist devices providing satisfactory medium-term results for bridging to transplant or recovery. The early postoperative period is critical and requires strict clinical vigilance, with selected infants benefiting from pulmonary artery banding as a safe bridge to recovery.

Development of Cardiac Events and Functional Recovery Prediction Models for Pediatric Dilated Cardiomyopathy

Dong-Hee Kim et al.

Summary: Risk stratification using outcome prediction modeling can enhance prognostication and management strategies for pediatric dilated cardiomyopathy. The study found that predicting spontaneous functional recovery and cardiac events can help guide individualized management approaches for pediatric dilated cardiomyopathy.
