Crystal structure and molecular characterization of NADP plus -farnesol dehydrogenase from cotton bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera

Rakesh Kumar et al.

Summary: This study investigates the structural and functional characterization of farnesol dehydrogenase in Helicoverpa armigera, a major cotton pest. The results show that the enzyme exists as a soluble homo-tetrameric form, exhibits broad substrate affinity, and is involved in the synthesis of juvenile hormone in insects. The crystal structure and substrate modeling provide insights into the enzyme's mechanism and substrate binding properties.

Knockdown of UDP-N-acetylglucosamine pyrophosphorylase and chitin synthase A increases the insecticidal efficiency of Lufenuron to Spodoptera exigua

Zhixian Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of double-stranded RNAs (dsRNAs) on the susceptibility of Spodoptera exigua larvae to Lufenuron (LUF). The researchers found that regulating the expression of genes associated with chitin biosynthesis and degradation can enhance the insecticidal activity of LUF against S. exigua. Additionally, the combined application of RNAi and LUF has significant effects on chitin content and biological response in S. exigua.

Identification and functional analysis of two potential RNAi targets for chitin degradation in Holotrichia parallela Motschulsky (Insecta Coleoptera)

Dan Zhao et al.

Summary: Chitin metabolism enzymes, specifically NAG and NAGK, play important roles in the degradation and conversion of chitin. In this study, NAG and NAGK genes were identified and their spatiotemporal expression patterns were investigated in Holotrichia parallela larvae. Silencing of HpNAG and HpNAGK resulted in a significant RNAi effect and inhibited larval growth. The study also showed that silencing these genes affected the expression levels of chitin metabolism-related genes and reduced the thickness and chitin content of the cuticle.

Overview of Pest Status, Potential Risk, and Management Considerations of Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) for US Soybean Production

Fikru Haile et al.

Summary: Since its introduction in Brazil in 2013, the Old World bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera, has become a significant pest in Latin America, posing potential threats to soybean and cotton crops. If established in the United States, it may cause economic loss in Mid-Southern states where similarities with the native sibling species, Helicoverpa zea, could complicate management strategies.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.

Overview of Pest Status, Potential Risk, and Management Considerations of Helicoverpa armigera (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) for US Soybean Production

Fikru Haile et al.

Summary: Since its introduction and establishment in Brazil in 2013 and subsequent spread through most of Latin America, the Old World bollworm, Helicoverpa armigera, has become an economically important pest of soybean, cotton, and other crops. The potential establishment of this pest in the United States poses uncertainties about how it may interact with the native sibling species and requires management strategies to be put in place for effective control.
