Cisplatin conjugation with an exopolysaccharide extracted from Lactobacillus gasseri potentiates its efficacy and attenuates its toxicity

Nisha Sharma et al.

Summary: This study investigated the conjugation of cisplatin with an exopolysaccharide from Lactobacillus gasseri (LG-EPS) and found that the resulting complex showed enhanced and selective anticancer activity against tumor cells overexpressing GLUT1. The complex had increased solubility and better pharmacokinetic profile compared to cisplatin, and its cytotoxicity correlated with GLUT1 expression. The study suggests that this green glycoconjugation can be a safe and effective strategy to broaden the therapeutic potential of cisplatin.

Microbial Exopolysaccharide Composites in Biomedicine and Healthcare: Trends and Advances

Vishal Ahuja et al.

Summary: Microbial exopolysaccharides (EPSs) such as xanthan, dextran, gellan, and curdlan have various applications in industries due to their biocompatibility, nontoxicity, and functional characteristics. However, their commercial use in healthcare practices is hindered by biodegradability issues, poor cell adhesion, mineralization, and low enzyme activity. Blending EPSs with other polymers can improve their characteristics and make the composites suitable for diverse applications, especially tissue engineering. More research is needed to address the challenges and commercialize these products.
