The Bumpy Road to Stem Cell Therapies: Rational Design of Surface Topographies to Dictate Stem Cell Mechanotransduction and Fate

James Carthew et al.

Summary: Cells respond to physical cues from their microenvironment, which is important for controlling stem cell behavior. Surface topographies can influence stem cell fate, and advances in fabrication technologies have allowed for the precise study of these mechanisms. However, further challenges must be overcome before the full potential of these approaches can be realized.

Biofunctional phosphorylated magnetic scaffold for bone tissue engineering

Banafsheh Safari et al.

Summary: This study successfully fabricated a biofunctional magnetic scaffold with well-developed porous morphology and stable structure, showing no toxicity on dental pulp stem cells and improved osteoconductivity. The use of phosphorylated polymer and magnetic nanoparticles enhanced bone mineralization and expression of osteogenic biomarkers in the scaffold. The phosphorylation also increased the osteoinductivity of the scaffold and upregulated specific genes related to bone formation.

Synthesis of high-modulus thermoset PUs of PCL-PTMG/CNW biomaterials with different soft domain architecture and composition for high shape memory performance

Elahe Aboueimehrizi et al.

Summary: This research investigates the impact of thermosetting and polyol crystallization on the shape memory performance of thermoset polyurethane (tPU) nanocomposites and thermoplastic PU (TPPU). The results show that the tPUs have high elastic modulus and small tan delta height due to their thermoset nature and the presence of cellulose nanowhisker (CNW). The PUs also exhibit high biocompatibility.

The Impact of Soft Segment Crystallization and Cross-Link Density on the Shape Memory Performance of the PCL-PTMG/Graphene- Based Polyurethane Nanocomposites

Mohammad Nourany et al.

Summary: In this research paper, the impact of soft segment crystallization, cross-linking density, and elastic modulus on the shape memory performance of synthesized thermoset polyurethanes was investigated. The study found that changing the length of the soft segments affected the crystallization behavior, while the addition of graphene nanoplatelets influenced the elastic modulus. The complex shape memory behavior was analyzed in detail, including the shape recovery rate which was affected by crystallites melting, cross-linking density, and elastic modulus.
