Isolation, purification, and metal-induced gelation of released polysaccharides from spent culture medium of Arthrospira

Sara P. Cuellar -Bermudez et al.

Summary: In this study, polysaccharides were isolated from an Arthrospira farm's spent culture medium and purified. These polysaccharides were rich in uronic acid, had low sulfate content, and contained various monosaccharides. The polysaccharides formed stable gel beads and exhibited stable gel properties. This research demonstrates the potential for using these recovered polysaccharides in food and biotechnological applications.

Impact of thermal processing on the nutrients, phytochemicals, and metal contaminants in edible algae

Kacie K. H. Y. Ho et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the effects of different types of processing on the components of algae food products, including nutrients, phytochemicals, and contaminants. The literature suggests that there are optimal processing conditions and cooking techniques that can increase retention of nutritional components while reducing concentrations of metal contaminants. However, further research is needed to understand the effects of thermal processing on individual compounds in algae.

Relationship between sensorial and physical characteristics of topical creams: A comparative study on effects of excipients

A. Ali et al.

Summary: This study focused on exploring the impact of different excipients on the sensorial and physical properties of topical products, revealing that variations in emollients, thickeners, and surfactant composition result in differences in sensory and rheological properties. Furthermore, significant differences were observed in afterfeel perception between surfactant-based creams and Pickering creams, with starch particles on the skin leading to higher tactile friction and lower perception of residue coating, stickiness, greasiness, and slipperiness.

A seaweed aquaculture imperative to meet global sustainability targets

Carlos M. Duarte et al.

Summary: Seaweed aquaculture, accounting for over half of global mariculture production, provides various ecosystem services and food/natural products for industries. It is seen as a versatile solution for climate change and biodiversity crisis. Scaling up seaweed aquaculture as an emission capture and utilization technology is crucial to support a circular bioeconomy and achieve UN Sustainable Development Goals for a growing global population by 2050.

Optimized extraction of sulfated polysaccharide from brown seaweed Sargassum polycystum and its evaluation for anti-cancer and wound healing potential

Prathapavarma Digala et al.

Summary: In this study, the extraction of water-soluble crude sulfated polysaccharide (WSCSP) from Sargassum polycystum was optimized and its biological activity was investigated. Acid hot water extraction resulted in a high WSCSP yield and the polysaccharide showed antioxidant activity, promoted wound healing, and demonstrated significant cytotoxicity against cervical cancer cells.

Nutrient recovery from wastewater treatment by ultrafiltration membrane for water reuse in view of a circular economy perspective

Alida Cosenza et al.

Summary: This study aims to recover nitrogen from wastewater through the use of ultrafiltration membrane for agricultural water reuse. It proposes and applies a new reclaimed water quality index (RWQI) with an innovative assessment protocol. The study analyzes the influence of filtration and backwashing times on nutrient recovery in an ultrafiltration system. The results show that backwashing time plays a crucial role in reducing operation costs, with the optimal compromise achieved at 7 minutes of filtration and 1 minute of backwashing.

Physicochemical and geroprotective comparison of Nostoc sphaeroides polysaccharides across colony growth stages and with derived oligosaccharides

Guohuan Zhong et al.

Summary: This study revealed distinct physicochemical and biofunctional properties of N. sphaeroides polysaccharides during colony growth stages, with a significant decrease in high/low molecular weight ratio. Both polysaccharides and oligosaccharides demonstrated antioxidant activities, while only oligosaccharides showed neuroprotective effects, suggesting their potential as novel geroprotectors. Additionally, oligosaccharides were found to upregulate stress and proteostasis-associated genes in C. elegans.

A 20-year retrospective review of global aquaculture

Rosamond L. Naylor et al.

Summary: The sustainability of aquaculture has been intensely debated since 2000, with major contributions coming from inland aquaculture in Asia. There have been significant advances in feed efficiency and fish nutrition, but reliance on marine ingredients remains a challenge. Molluscs and seaweed have potential for ecosystem services and global nutritional security, but their quantification, valuation, and market development are still underexploited.
