Preparation and characterization of bioplastics from silylated cassava starch and epoxidized soybean oils

Jianlei Yang et al.

Summary: In this work, the coupling study between silane coupling agent and starch was conducted, and the modified starch was used to synthesize bioplastics with epoxidized soybean oils (ESO). The modification inhibited the hydrogen bond interactions among starch molecules, leading to higher interaction and compatibility with ESO. The silylated starch-based bioplastics exhibited improved thermal stability and mechanical properties.

Plasticized hydroxypropyl cassava starch blended PBAT for improved clarity blown films: Morphology and properties

Kiattichai Wadaugsorn et al.

Summary: Blending of plasticized hydroxypropyl cassava thermoplastic starch (TPS) with polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) via blown-film extrusion was studied. Higher DS values were found to increase film clarity and glossy surface, reduce crystallinity, improve hydrophilicity, mechanical properties and compatibility between PBAT and TPS. Modified DS in hydroxypropyl starch efficiently improved clarity, mechanical and barrier properties of bioplastic packaging.

A Comprehensive Review on the Emerging Roles of Nanofillers and Plasticizers towards Sustainable Starch-Based Bioplastic Fabrication

Shiou Xuan Tan et al.

Summary: Petroleum-based plastics pose environmental pollution problems due to their non-biodegradable and toxic properties, but renewable and biodegradable bioplastics have the potential to replace them. The fabrication of bioplastic films requires a delicate mixture of film-forming agents, plasticizers, and solvents. Research has focused on enhancing bioplastics' performance by using environmentally friendly nanoparticles. This review paper highlights the influencing factors on the properties of starch-based bioplastics and discusses their formation mechanism.

Thermoplastic starch from corn and wheat: a comparative study based on amylose content

Mhd. Mazen Altayan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the rheological, structural, thermal, and mechanical properties of thermoplastic starches prepared from wheat and corn starches, finding that the differences in properties were mainly attributed to the varying amylose content in the starches. The study also revealed that wheat starch had a higher ability to form strong hydrogen bonds with plasticizers compared to corn starch, which was confirmed by FT-IR analysis. Additionally, a direct relationship between mechanical properties and amylose content was observed.
