Enzymatic Synthesis of Ascorbyl Palmitate in a Rotating Bed Reactor

Jessica Holtheuer et al.

Summary: The enzymatic synthesis of ascorbyl palmitate in a rotating basket reactor operated in sequential batches was evaluated. It was found that Lipozyme((R)) 435 was the most suitable catalyst, and 2-methyl-2-butanol was the most appropriate solvent. The results obtained in the basket reactor showed great potential for large-scale application.

Immobilized Biocatalyst Engineering: High throughput enzyme immobilization for the integration of biocatalyst improvement strategies

Karen Rodriguez-Nunez et al.

Summary: The study introduces a novel enzyme improvement platform, Immobilized Biocatalyst Engineering (IBE), which integrates protein engineering (PE) and enzyme immobilization (EI) to simultaneously enhance biocatalysts. The IBE approach allows for the evaluation of thousands of variants in a short time, leading to the discovery of highly stable and active heterogeneous biocatalysts that show significant improvement over traditional methods. This innovative approach increases the probability of finding suitable biocatalysts for highly demanding processes.

New frontiers in enzyme immobilisation: robust biocatalysts for a circular bio-based economy†

Roger A. Sheldon et al.

Summary: This tutorial review focuses on recent advances in technologies for enzyme immobilisation, enabling their cost-effective use in the bio-based economy and continuous processing in general. The application of enzymes, particularly in aqueous media, is generally on a single use, throw-away basis which is neither cost-effective nor compatible with a circular economy concept. This shortcoming can be overcome by immobilising the enzyme as an insoluble recyclable solid, that is as a heterogeneous catalyst.
