Enzymatic modification of native chitin and chitin oligosaccharides by an alkaline chitin deacetylase from Microbacterium esteraromaticum MCDA02

Guang Yang et al.

Summary: In this study, chitin deacetylase from Microbacterium esteraromaticum MCDA02 (MeCDA) was purified and characterized. The enzyme can efficiently catalyze the deacetylation of chitin and hydrolytic cleavage of the acetamido bond in GlcNAc units. These findings suggest a value-added utilization of chitin based biological resources.

Characterization of chitin and chitosan derived from Hermetia illucens, a further step in a circular economy process

Micaela Triunfo et al.

Summary: Due to the increasing demand, alternative sources for chitin and chitosan are being explored. Hermetia illucens, a bioconverter insect, can produce chitin and chitosan from different biomasses. Pupal exuviae, larvae, and dead adults are valuable biomasses for chitin and chitosan production. The insect-derived polymers show similarity to commercial ones in terms of purity and structural morphology, making them suitable for industrial and biomedical applications. Chitosan obtained from H. illucens has a lower viscosity-average molecular weight and a high deacetylation degree, suggesting potential antimicrobial properties.

Production of Low Molecular Weight Chitosan and Chitooligosaccharides (COS): A Review

Cleidiane Goncalves et al.

Summary: Chitosan's molecular weight can be regulated through different hydrolysis methods, with acid hydrolysis being the most commonly used method, but may cause environmental impacts. Combining different hydrolysis methods may be the most effective approach, although it could increase costs. Enzymatic hydrolysis is widely studied due to its environmental advantages and high specificity, but factors such as hydrolysis time and cost still limit its industrial application.
