Functionalization of chitosan with poly aromatic hydroxyl molecules for improving its antibacterial and antioxidant properties: Practical and theoretical studies

Tamer M. Tamer et al.

Summary: In this study, chitosan was modified with 2,2',4,4'-tetrahydroxybenzophenone through Schiff base, resulting in a new derivative with improved biological properties. The structural characterization was done using 1H NMR, FT-IR, and UV-Vis analyses. The thermal analysis showed that the CS-THB derivatives are more stable than chitosan itself. The antioxidant properties were significantly enhanced, and the new derivative showed potential for tissue regeneration applications.

Summary: This study aimed to synthesize a functionalized chitosan, Cs-TMB, by coupling the amine groups of chitosan with 2,4,6-Trimethoxybenzaldehyde. Cs-TMB showed improved antioxidant and antibacterial activities compared to native chitosan. It also exhibited a safe profile against normal fibroblast cells and demonstrated prominent anticancer properties against human skin cancer cells.

Summary: The antimicrobial activities of chitosan were improved by coupling it with cyclohexanone and 2-N-methyl pyrrolidone to synthesize novel Schiff bases. These derivatives showed enhanced antimicrobial capacities, especially against Gram-positive bacteria and Candida albicans. Furthermore, they exhibited biocompatibility with fibroblasts, suggesting potential use in wound healing.

Carboxymethyl cellulose/sericin-based hydrogels with intrinsic antibacterial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties promote re-epithelization of diabetic wounds in rats

Lamia M. El-Samad et al.

Summary: Diabetic wound healing is challenging due to its disruption by oxidative stress and infections. However, the multifunctional CMC-Sericin hydrogel has shown promising results in enhancing wound healing, reducing oxidative stress, and promoting tissue regeneration, even without insulin treatment.

Corn stalk/AgNPs modified chitin composite hemostatic sponge with high absorbency, rapid shape recovery and promoting wound healing ability

Qimeng Jiang et al.

Summary: This study utilized loose corn stalk and silver nanoparticles to enhance the structure and antibacterial activity of chitin sponge, producing a crosslinked CH/CS/AgNPs sponge for antimicrobial hemostasis. The sponge demonstrated high blood absorbing ratio, low in vitro blood clotting index, and excellent in vivo hemostatic efficiency without causing inflammation. Additionally, it showed favorable biocompatibility and antibacterial properties against E. coli and S. aureus, with a wound closure rate of 76.5% after 11 days of treatment.

Harnessing biocompatible nanofibers and silver nanoparticles for wound healing: Sandwich wound dressing versus commercial silver sulfadiazine dressing

Cai He et al.

Summary: The study successfully designed and fabricated a sandwich wound dressing by incorporating silver nanoparticles into nanofibers to balance antimicrobial activity and biocompatibility, showing competitive antimicrobial properties, lower cell toxicity, and accelerated wound closure for mouse skin injury. Balancing the biocompatibility of electrospun nanofibers and the broad-spectrum antibacterial activity of AgNPs within a sandwich structure, the novel multifunctional wound dressing could be valuable for effective wound healing and related applications.
