Analytical methods for assessing antimicrobial activity of nanomaterials in complex media: advances, challenges, and perspectives

Xuzhi Zhang et al.

Summary: Assessing the antimicrobial activity of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) is important for research and applications. Multiple analytical methods for measuring microbial viability and/or metabolic activity in complex real-world samples are discussed, including their accuracy, cost, efficiency, and user-friendliness. The review aims to help researchers choose suitable methods to understand the antimicrobial activities of ENMs in artificial and natural complex matrices.

Green synthesis of silver nanoparticles using sodium alginate and tannic acid: characterization and anti-S. aureus activity

Simin Tian et al.

Summary: This study focused on the ultrasonic-assisted green synthesis of stable and monodispersed silver nanoparticles with antibacterial and antibiofilm activities. The AgNPs showed significant inhibitory effects on Staphylococcus aureus and effectively suppressed biofilm formation. The development of AgNPs loaded TA/Na-Alg constructs presents a promising strategy for combating S. aureus contamination.

Structural, mechanistic, and physiological insights into phospholipase A-mediated membrane phospholipid degradation in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Florian Bleffert et al.

Summary: Cells adapt their membrane composition to changing conditions by regulating GPL synthesis and degradation. This study identified a cytoplasmic membrane-bound phospholipase A(1) (PlaF) from Pseudomonas aeruginosa that might be involved in GPL remodeling. PlaF is an important virulence factor and its structure and activation mechanism were revealed, offering insights for the development of therapeutics targeting PlaF.

Comparison of In Vitro Approaches to Assess the Antibacterial Effects of Nanomaterials

Abdulkader Masri et al.

Summary: The antibacterial properties of nanomaterials are important in consumer products and infectious disease treatments. Currently, there is a lack of standardized methods for evaluating the antibacterial activity of nanomaterials. By comparing the antibacterial effects of copper oxide nanomaterials on different strains of bacteria using various tests, it was found that the time-kill and OD assays were the most sensitive. Standard operating protocols should be developed for a harmonized assessment of nanomaterials' antibacterial activity.

Toxicity of synthesized silver nanoparticles in a widespread fish: A comparison between green and chemical

Waqar Younas et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the toxic effects of different shapes and compositions of metallic nanoparticles on fish. The results showed that Ag2O-Chem NPs had the highest toxic effects, while Ag-Green NPs had the least effects. Replacing chemically synthesized nanoparticles with green synthesized AgNPs can reduce the harmful effects on the aquatic environment.
