Insulin-loaded liposomes packaged in alginate hydrogels promote the oral bioavailability of insulin

Haishan Wu et al.

Summary: Compared to subcutaneous injections, oral administration of insulin is preferred for diabetic patients. However, challenges such as early drug release and poor absorption hinder the effectiveness of liposomes and alginate hydrogels for oral delivery. This study presents a liposome-in-alginate hydrogel loaded with arginine-insulin complexes, demonstrating improved intestinal permeation and retention, controlled release, and hypoglycemic effects. Therefore, this strategy holds promise for oral insulin delivery.

Characterization of drug-loaded alginate-chitosan polyelectrolyte nanoparticles synthesized by microfluidics

Mohammad Hossein Zamani et al.

Summary: In this study, microfluidic approach and bulk mixing method were used to synthesize 5-fluorouracil-loaded alginate-chitosan polyelectrolyte-based nanoparticles. The microfluidic nanoparticles showed smaller size, narrower size distribution and higher zeta potential compared to bulk mixing nanoparticles. The microfluidic nanoparticles also exhibited higher drug encapsulation efficiency and drug loading capacity. In vitro release studies revealed that the microfluidic nanoparticles showed a lower burst release and a more controlled release, following the Higuchi model at different pHs. Overall, the microfluidic nanoparticles are considered reliable for the controlled release of 5-FU.

Structural and functional properties of sodium caseinate glycosylated by dextran aldehyde

Ying Li et al.

Summary: Glycosylation is an effective protein modification method that enhances protein functionality. Traditional methods are limited by slow reaction rates. This study presents a method to improve protein glycosylation efficiency using different levels of dextran oxidation with periodate to obtain dextran aldehydes. A higher molar ratio between periodate and glucose unit resulted in dextran aldehydes with higher aldehyde content and reduced molecular weight. The degree of glycosylation increased by 43.22% due to increased oxidation. Compared to dextran glycosylated products, the emulsifying activity, stability indices, and foaming capacity of dextran aldehyde glycosylated products significantly improved, although foam stability was poor. Dextran aldehyde-modified sodium caseinate demonstrated lower digestibility and better stability against salt ions and heat treatment. Polysaccharide aldehydes show great potential for industrial protein modification.

The effects of pulsed electric fields treatment on the structure and physicochemical properties of dialdehyde starch

Ying Li et al.

Summary: The structural and physicochemical properties of corn starch oxidized by sodium periodate under PEF assistance were examined. The results showed that PEF-assisted oxidation produced dialdehyde starch (DAS) particles with shrinkage, pits, and larger particle size compared to the control. The solubility of DAS increased by 70.2% with 12 kV/cm PEF assistance. Increasing PEF strength decreased the viscosity of DAS. Furthermore, the aldehyde group content of DAS produced by PEF-assisted oxidation increased by 11.6% compared to traditional oxidation methods. PEF is an effective method to promote starch oxidation reactions.

Modified porous starches loading curcumin and improving the free radical scavenging ability and release properties of curcumin

Xiuying Han et al.

Summary: Maize porous starch-curcumin microspheres were prepared by encapsulating curcumin into modified porous starch to study its embedding and protective effects. The microspheres exhibited improved drug loading, controlled release, and antioxidant properties. The encapsulation of curcumin within modified porous starch enabled a controlled release of curcumin, with the cross-linked porous starch microspheres showing higher encapsulation and slow release ability compared to the oxidized porous starch microspheres.

Pulsed electric field-assisted esterification improves the freeze-thaw stability of corn starch gel by changing its molecular structure

Bo-Ru Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of pulsed electric field (PEF) combined with octenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) on the freeze-thaw stability of corn starch gel. The results showed that PEF-assisted esterification significantly improved the freeze-thaw stability of the starch gel by hindering the re-formation of the helical structure during freeze-thaw cycles. The introduction of OSA groups also increased the water-holding capacity of starch.

The microstructure and thermal properties of pulsed electric field pretreated oxidized starch

Ying Li et al.

Summary: The structure and thermal properties of pulsed electric field (PEF) assisted sodium hypochlorite oxidized starch were examined. PEF treatment significantly increased the carboxyl content of the oxidized starch and resulted in visible surface defects. The gelatinization temperature of PEF-assisted oxidized starch was reduced more than that of traditional oxidation method. PEF treatment also improved the viscosity and thermal stability of the starch slurry. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of PEF treatment combined with hypochlorite oxidation in the preparation of oxidized starch and its potential for various applications.

Effect of nanoemulsion-loaded hybrid biopolymeric hydrogel beads on the release kinetics, antioxidant potential and antibacterial activity of encapsulated curcumin

Pawandeep Kour et al.

Summary: Nanoemulsion encapsulated in ionotropic hybrid hydrogel beads of alginate, chitosan, gelatin and polyethylene oxide can effectively deliver hydrophobic active ingredients like curcumin, enhancing their bioavailability and biological activities. The release behavior in simulated gastric and intestinal fluids showed faster release in gastric fluid, potentially due to mesh size, hydration extent, and interaction with Ca2+ ions. The released curcumin in gastric fluid showed significantly greater free radical scavenging and antibacterial activities compared to intestinal fluid.
