Antioxidant pectins from eggplant (Solanum melongena) fruit exocarp, calyx and flesh isolated through high-power ultrasound and sodium carbonate

Ricardo A. Higuera-Coelho et al.

Summary: Dried and milled eggplant fruit peel and calyces (PC) and mesocarp, placenta and core (Mes) were used as natural sources of valuable chemicals. Pectins were extracted using 0.1 M Na2CO3, and a high-power ultrasound pretreatment in a powder: water ratio of 10:200 led to the highest recoveries of uronic acid from PC and Mes. The obtained pectins had low degree of methylesterification, low acetylation, and relatively low molecular weights with low polydispersity, and they exhibited antioxidant properties.

Structural characterization of water-soluble polysaccharides isolated from leaves of Hedera nepalensis

ChungHyok Ho et al.

Summary: This study isolated water-soluble polysaccharides (WHNP) from the leaves of Hedera nepalensis and investigated their structural features. The results showed that two fractions, WHNP-A2b and WHNP-A3b, were mainly composed of rhamnogalacturonan I (RG-I). WHNP-A2c was primarily comprised of galacturonic acid (GalA) and was rich in RG-I structures. This research contributes to understanding the structure-activity relationships of these polysaccharide fractions.

The model polysaccharide potato galactan is actually a mixture of different polysaccharides

Zhangkai Feng et al.

Summary: Commercially-supplied potato galactan (PG) is commonly used in bioactivity studies, but its composition can vary. In this study, we fractionated and purified the primary components of commercial PG, including PG-A, PG-B, and PG-Cp, and evaluated their structures and activities. The purified fractions provided better model polysaccharides for bioactivity investigations and clarified the confusion associated with commercial PG.

Structure and antioxidant activity of six mushroom-derived heterogalactans

Yunhe Qu et al.

Summary: Heterogalactans with weight-average molecular weights similar to 20 kDa were isolated from several species of mushroom and their structures were analyzed. These heterogalactans have a common backbone composed of (1 -> 6)-linked-alpha-D-galactopyranosyl residues that are substituted at O-2. The mannogalactans or fucogalactans have been identified as (1 -> 6)-alpha-D-galactans, branched primarily with beta-D-mannopyranosyl or alpha-L-fucopyranosyl residues. The 3-O-methylated-alpha-D-galactopyranosyl residues within the mannogalactan chains exhibit strong antioxidant activity.

The variation on structure and immunomodulatory activity of polysaccharide during the longan pulp fermentation

Teng-Gen Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of fermentation methods on the structure and immunomodulatory activity of polysaccharides in longan wine or vinegar. Fermentation and purification were found to improve the immunomodulatory activity of polysaccharides by enhancing their structural features. Among the polysaccharides tested, P3 displayed the highest immunomodulatory activity due to its specific structural characteristics and activation of signaling pathways.

Sweritranslactone D, a hepatoprotective novel secoiridoid dimer with tetracyclic lactone skeleton from heat-transformed swertiamarin

Ya-Dan Zou et al.

Summary: Swertia mileensis, also known as Qing-Ye-Dan (QYD), has been documented in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia for its efficacy in treating hepatitis. The main active component, swertiamarin, was not detected in the decoction, suggesting that the efficacy of QYD may be due to heat-transformed products of swertiamarin (HTPS). Further investigation led to the discovery of a novel compound, sweritranslactone D (1), with a tetracyclic lactone skeleton and better hepatoprotective activity than N-acetyl-L-cysteine in vitro.
