Facile fabrication of robust bilayer film loaded with chitosan active microspheres for potential multifunctional food packing

Zhenan Rao et al.

Summary: The study aimed to develop a simple and facile strategy to design a multifunctional bilayer bioactive film with stable mechanical properties, sustained-release characteristics for active ingredients, and good antioxidant and antibacterial properties. EGCG-loaded chitosan active microspheres were prepared using the sol-gel method, and then assembled onto a carboxymethyl chitosan gel substrate to construct a film with a stable bilayer structure. The results showed that the bilayer film had a dense microstructure and excellent mechanical strength (37.05 MPa), and exhibited UV-blocking properties and excellent gas barrier performance. The bilayer film also demonstrated excellent antioxidant and antibacterial properties, with sustainable and pH-responsive controlled release of EGCG.
