The effect of temperature on physical activity: an aggregated timeseries analysis of smartphone users in five major Chinese cities

Janice Y. Ho et al.

Summary: This study examined the associations between temperature and objectively measured physical activity among adult populations in five major Chinese cities. The results showed that high temperatures were associated with decreased step counts in cold or temperate climate cities, but not in subtropical cities. Females and the elderly demonstrated lower optimal temperatures for physical activity and larger decreases in step count in warmer temperatures.

A dual-process model of affective and instrumental attitudes in predicting physical activity

Summary: This study utilized a novel dual-process model based on the affective-reflective theory, and found that affective attitudes play a key role in guiding physical activity behavior, regardless of whether these evaluations are implicit or explicitly accessible.

Climate Change, Physical Activity and Sport: A Systematic Review

Paquito Bernard et al.

Summary: The study reveals a consistent negative impact of air pollution, extreme weather conditions, and natural disasters on levels of physical activity, particularly affecting adults with chronic diseases, higher BMI, and the elderly. Although the sport and physical activity communities play an important mitigating role post-natural disasters, transport related to sports practices also contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.

Adolescents' sedentary time, affect, and contextual factors: An ecological momentary assessment study

Chelsea L. Kracht et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the relationship between context at home and adolescent sedentary time using real-time data capture methods. The findings revealed that being alone and indoors at home were positively associated with sedentary time. Adjusted sedentary time was not related to subsequent positive affect, indicating other factors may influence adolescent's positive affect in home settings.

Associations between weather conditions and physical activity and sedentary time in children and adolescents: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Chen Zheng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the associations between weather conditions and physical activity (PA) and sedentary time (ST) in children and adolescents. Results show that higher temperatures are associated with more PA, while lower temperature and heavy rainfall are associated with longer ST. Children and adolescents tend to engage in more PA during favorable weather conditions.

An empirical example of analysis using a two-stage modeling approach: within-subject association of outdoor context and physical activity predicts future daily physical activity levels

Chih-Hsiang Yang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a novel two-stage statistical modeling strategy to test whether subject-level slopes between two momentary variables predict subject-level outcomes. The results show that higher levels of momentary moderate-to-vigorous physical activity were observed in outdoor contexts compared to indoor contexts, and these momentary differences can predict future mean daily physical activity levels.

Summary: The study found that feelings of energy are strongly linked to activity-related behaviors in older adults, while positive or negative affect is unrelated to activity. These findings may impact the delivery of just-in-time intervention based on affective states or current behaviors.
