Adaptive Hermite spectral methods in unbounded domains

Tom Chou et al.

Summary: This article introduces a novel adaptive spectral method for numerically solving partial differential equations in unbounded domains. It provides a numerical analysis of the method using generalized Hermite functions and explores parameter tuning for improving accuracy and efficiency.

A Seamless, Extended DG Approach for Advection-Diffusion Problems on Unbounded Domains

Federico Vismara et al.

Summary: This paper proposes and analyzes a seamless extended Discontinuous Galerkin (DG) discretization method for advection-diffusion equations on semi-infinite domains. The method splits the semi-infinite half line into a finite subdomain and a semi-unbounded subdomain, and uses different sets of basis functions in each subdomain. Numerical experiments show that the method has negligible errors and efficient performance. The extended framework is able to simulate absorbing boundary conditions without additional conditions at the interface.

A Constant Pressure Upper Boundary Formulation for Models Employing Height-Based Vertical Coordinates

J. B. Klemp et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a modification to the height-based coordinate formulation that allows the height of the upper boundary to adaptively follow a constant pressure surface. This modification provides flexibility for height-based models in atmospheric numerical simulations, particularly in applications extending into the thermosphere. The modification requires minor adjustments and can facilitate the transition to a deep atmosphere configuration without significant retooling of the model numerics.

A high order compact time/space finite difference scheme for the 2D and 3D wave equation with a damping layer

Adar Kahana et al.

Summary: This article introduces fourth order accurate compact schemes for the second order wave equation with a variable speed of sound, including the addition of a fourth order accurate sponge layer for unbounded domains. It demonstrates that this approach is usually more efficient than lower order schemes, despite being implicit and conditionally stable. Fast time marching of the implicit scheme is achieved through iterative methods.

Orthogonal Jacobi Rational Functions and Spectral Methods on the Half Line

Dong-qin Gu et al.

Summary: A new system of Jacobi rational functions is introduced and shown to be mutually orthogonal with respect to the weight function x(beta) on the half line. Properties and approximation results on Jacobi rational functions are established, and spectral methods for elliptic boundary value problems on unbounded domains are proposed with proven convergence. Numerical results demonstrate the spectral accuracy of these approaches.

Adapting the MPAS Dynamical Core for Applications Extending Into the Thermosphere

J. B. Klemp et al.

Summary: For deep-atmosphere applications, the nonhydrostatic global Model for Prediction Across Scales (MPAS) has been modified to include variable atmospheric composition and parameters like molecular viscosity. While variations in atmospheric constituents affect the dynamical equations, these changes have little impact on the dynamical equations. Molecular viscosity and thermal conductivity play dominant roles in the upper thermosphere, and while their treatment in the model numerics may under represent their damping effects, they are stable for simulations of thermospheric dynamics. Further exploration will be undertaken to study the effects in more realistic simulations.

EFFICIENT SCALING AND MOVING TECHNIQUES FOR SPECTRAL METHODS IN UNBOUNDED DOMAINS

Mingtao Xia et al.

Summary: The paper proposes scaling and moving techniques to adaptively cluster collocation points in a region of interest for fast spectral convergence. Frequency and exterior-error indicators are defined using numerical solutions, applied to various models demonstrating recovery of spectral convergence. Performance comparison shows the frequency scaling algorithm outperforms existing approaches, tracking blowup of average cell sizes successfully.
