Multimethod analysis of three rotary instruments produced by electric discharge machining technology

Emmanuel J. N. L. Silva et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare three rotary instruments produced by the EDM process with the heat-treated ProTaper Gold system regarding design, metallurgy, mechanical properties and shaping ability. The results showed that HyFlex EDM, Neoniti, and EDMax rotary instruments had similar designs, metallurgy, and mechanical performances when compared with ProTaper Gold. However, there were no differences in their shaping ability.

Impact of Endodontic Kinematics on Stress Distribution During Root Canal Treatment: Analysis of Photoelastic Stress

Shelyn Akari Yamakami et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the levels of stress produced by different endodontic instruments during root canal treatment using photoelastic analysis. The results showed that all endodontic systems resulted in accumulation of stress along the dental structure, with slight variations in stress levels among different instruments.

Design, Metallurgical Features, and Mechanical Behaviour of NiTi Endodontic Instruments from Five Different Heat-Treated Rotary Systems

Jorge N. R. Martins et al.

Summary: The current study compares the F1 endodontic instruments from five different heat-treated rotary systems in terms of their design, metallurgical properties, and mechanical performance. It is found that the instruments have similar nickel/titanium ratio and overall design, but differ in their performance. Super Files Blue shows the best durability, while Premium Taper Gold and Go-Taper Flex are more flexible.

What Meaningful Information Are the Instruments Mechanical Testing Giving Us? A Comprehensive Review

Jorge N. R. Martins et al.

Summary: The mechanical strength and flexibility of instruments are traditionally evaluated through various tests, including cyclic fatigue, torsional, bending, buckling, and microhardness tests. Cyclic fatigue testing, in particular, can provide valuable information on the factors that may affect fatigue strength outcomes. Despite their importance, these tests are associated with limitations such as artificiality, simplicity, inconsistency, and low external validity. Efforts have been made to improve the reliability of the outcomes by incorporating settings that mimic clinical conditions.

Photoelasticity for Stress Concentration Analysis in Dentistry and Medicine

Miriam Marin-Miranda et al.

Summary: Photoelasticity is an optical technique used in medicine and dentistry to observe and understand biomechanics. In dentistry, it is mainly used in disciplines related to fixed prosthesis implants, while in medicine, it is predominantly used in orthopedic research. However, there are no reports on the use of photoelastic models as teaching aids in either field. Although photoelasticity has been widely used in research, its application in clinical learning has not been fully explored due to limitations in the characteristics of the results obtained.

Bioengineering Tools Applied to Dentistry: Validation Methods for In Vitro and In Silico Analysis

Jefferson David Melo de Matos et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the use of bioengineering tools, such as finite element analysis, strain gauge analysis, photoelastic analysis, and digital image correlation, in computational studies to improve their validity and reproducibility. The study found significant variations in the number of articles between the Pubmed and Scholar Google databases. Modern dentistry utilizes these tools to analyze the biomechanical behavior of dental materials, aiming for favorable rehabilitation outcomes and patient satisfaction.

Comparison of cyclic fatigue resistance of Rotate instrument with reciprocating and continuous rotary nickel-titanium instruments at body temperature in relation to their transformation temperatures

Cangul Keskin et al.

Summary: The study compared the cyclic fatigue resistance and phase transformation behaviors of different endodontic instruments at body temperature. Results showed that Reciproc Blue instruments exhibited the highest cyclic fatigue resistance, while Rotate instruments had better fatigue resistance compared to Reciproc and Mtwo instruments.

Comparison of design, metallurgy, mechanical performance and shaping ability of replica-like and counterfeit instruments of the ProTaper Next system

J. N. R. Martins et al.

Summary: The study compared the ProTaper Next system with a replica-like and a counterfeit system in terms of design, metallurgy, mechanical performance, and shaping ability. The results showed similarities in nickel-titanium ratio and maximum torque to fracture among the systems, but differences in design, phase transformation temperatures, and mechanical behavior. The counterfeit instruments had lower cyclic fatigue resistance compared to the genuine system.

Design, metallurgical features, mechanical performance and canal preparation of six reciprocating instruments

J. N. R. Martins et al.

Summary: This study compared six reciprocating instruments in terms of their geometric design, metallurgical characteristics, mechanical behavior, and ability to prepare root canals. While the instruments had similarities in metal composition and unprepared canal area, they showed differences in phase transformation temperatures and geometric design. The study found that there were variations in the overall geometric design, phase transformation temperatures, and mechanical resistance parameters among the instruments.

Effects of Root Canal Curvature and Mechanical Properties of Nickel-Titanium Files on Torque Generation

Sang Won Kwak et al.

Summary: The study observed a significant correlation between the curvature angle and the type of file system, with an increase in total and maximum torque generated as the degree of canal curvature increased. NiTi files with reciprocating motion showed higher torque values at 15 degrees and 25 degrees compared to files with continuous rotation, with ProTaper Universal exhibiting the steepest increase in torque with increasing curvature angle. ProTaper Next files had the lowest torque values at higher canal angles of 35 degrees and 45 degrees.
