The effect of TiO2 nanoparticles on bacterial growth: the effect of particle size and their structure - a systematic review

Ahmad Jonidi Jafari et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the influence of composite material composition, particle size, bacterial type and shape on minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of TiO2-based materials. Among the selected articles, most studies used Escherichia coli (E. coli) (26) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) (19) bacteria. The results revealed that the MIC value for S. aureus was lower than that for E. coli bacteria, and the MIC value decreased with a decrease in nanoparticle size due to increased interaction with bacteria during MIC testing.

Cu2+-doped α-β phase heterojunctions in Bi2O3 nanoparticles for enhanced photocatalytic degradation of organic dye rhodamine B

Anuradha Sharma et al.

Summary: The study showed that the modification with Cu2+ ions significantly enhanced the photocatalytic activity of α-beta Bi2O3, leading to complete degradation of pollutants in a short period of time. The sample with 2 mol% Cu in Bi2O3 lattice exhibited the highest activity, attributed to the effective separation of charge carriers due to Cu2+ doping and formation of alpha-beta phase heterojunctions.

Summary: An energy efficient hydrothermal route was used to synthesize binary TiO2/Bi2O3, followed by a chemical method to prepare novel ternary TiO2/Bi2O3/Pd nanocomposites. The resulting composites showed improved characteristics and high activity towards the degradation of RhB under visible LED irradiation, even after cyclic experiments. Scavenger studies revealed the active species responsible for RhB removal, making the synthesized composites promising for low power consuming photoreactors in water purification systems.

Developments in visible-light active TiO2/SnX (X = S and Se) and their environmental photocatalytic applications - A mini-review

Shankar Sharma et al.

Summary: The review focuses on discussing the changes in characteristics of TiO2 when composited with tin sulphide and selenides, highlighting the advantages of sulphide and selenide as potential candidates for environmental purification due to their narrow bandgap, unique electronic structure, and larger surface-to-volume ratio. Additionally, the review also emphasizes the significant impact of adding SnX (X = S, Se) in TiO2 on the properties of the composites, such as light absorption tendency and lifespan of photoinduced charged carriers.

Shankar Sharma et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of TiO2/Bi2O3 and TiO2/Bi2O3/CuO composites were synthesized using the facile solution combustion approach, showing good optical characteristics and high photocatalytic efficiency for organic pollutant removal. The ternary composite with 10% Bi2O3 and 10% CuO exhibited the best photocatalytic performance, possibly due to the formation of heterojunctions and improved optical characteristics towards the visible region. The synthesized samples demonstrated fast removal of pollutants under visible LEDs, which is beneficial for cost-effective water purification techniques.
