ZnS Nanospheres Coated with ZnSe/MoSe2 Shells as Dual Heterojunctions with Wide Spectral Responses for the Photoreduction of Cr(VI)

Longyu Qiu et al.

Summary: In this study, ZnS/ZnSe/MoSe2 (ZZM) nanocomposites with dual type-II heterojunctions were synthesized for the first time by solvothermal and ion exchange methods. The photocatalytic performance of ZZM nanocomposites in the reduction of Cr(VI) under visible light irradiation was evaluated. The ZZM-1:1 nanocomposites achieved a 96.0% reduction of Cr(VI) with a reaction rate constant 3.67, 3.44, and 10.49 times higher than MoSe2, ZnSe, and ZnS, respectively. The improved photocatalytic activity can be attributed to the dual heterostructures, enhanced light response range, and increased specific surface area. The ZZM nanocomposites show great potential in removing Cr(VI) from wastewater.

Efficient photocatalysis of Cu doped TiO2/g-C3N4 for the photodegradation of methylene blue

Heshan Liyanaarachchi et al.

Summary: The release of dyes into water reservoirs is a significant environmental problem, and finding methods to remove such dyes is crucial. In this study, a novel photocatalyst, Cu-doped TiO2 coupled with g-C3N4 (Cu-TiO2/g-C3N4), was successfully fabricated by hydrothermal method at different weight percentages. The synthesized Cu-TiO2/g-C3N4 photocatalysts showed high degradation efficiency for methylene blue under UV and visible light, with Cu-TiO2/50% g-C3N4 exhibiting the highest rate constant. Therefore, Cu-TiO2/g-C3N4 can effectively degrade methylene blue.

Summary: CeVO4-rGO nanocomposites with varying proportions of CeVO4: rGO (10, 20 and 30 wt% CeVO4) were synthesized by a rapid microwave hydrothermal method. The composites showed lowered band gaps, making them active for the photodegradation of Bromophenol blue (BRB) and Eosin Yellow (EY) dyes under visible light. The sample with 20 wt% CeVO4 exhibited the highest efficiency, with almost complete degradation of EY achieved within 60 minutes and 91.6% degradation of BRB achieved within 105 minutes. The composites also demonstrated good recyclability.

CuS-Based Nanostructures as Catalysts for Organic Pollutants Photodegradation

Luminita Isac et al.

Summary: The direct or indirect discharge of toxic and non-biodegradable organic pollutants into water poses a significant threat to human health and the environment. Hence, the utilization of sustainable technologies for wastewater treatment is crucial for reuse. Photocatalysis, a highly innovative advanced technique, is regarded as an effective method for pollutant removal from wastewater due to its efficiency, simplicity, affordability, and environmentally friendly byproducts. Photocatalysis relies on carefully selecting catalysts, typically semiconductor materials with high solar light absorption capacity and conductivity for photogenerated charge carriers. Among copper sulfides, CuS (covellite), as a semiconductor with diverse morphologies and bandgap values, stands out as an essential photocatalyst for eliminating various organic pollutants (e.g., dyes, pesticides, pharmaceuticals) from wastewater. This review explores recent advancements in the photodegradation of organic pollutants using various CuS nanostructures, including CuS NPs, CuS QDs, and heterojunctions (CuS/carbon-based materials, CuS/organic semiconductors, CuS/metal oxides). The impacts of different synthesis parameters (Cu:S molar ratios, surfactant concentration, etc.) and properties (particle size, morphology, bandgap energy, surface properties) on the photocatalytic performance of CuS-based catalysts for degrading different organic pollutants are extensively discussed.
