Circularly Polarized Luminescence Switching, Chirality Self-Sorting, and Cell Imaging of Chiral Rhodamine Dyes

Lang Qu et al.

Summary: Rhodamine dyes are important tools in analytical and biochemical research, but their chiroptical properties remain a challenge. This study successfully links two rhodamine chromophores using different chiral bridges, resulting in birhodamine dyes with circular dichroism and circularly polarized luminescence switching properties. Additionally, unconjugated birhodamine dyes exhibit interesting cellular staining properties. The mechanisms of chiroptical switching and diastereoselectivity are investigated using single-crystal structures and density functional theory calculations.

Circularly Polarized Luminescence of Some [2]Paracyclo[2](5,8)quinoliphane Derivatives with Planar and Central Chirality

Giuseppe Mazzeo et al.

Summary: Testing nine [2]paracyclo[2](5,8)-quinoliphane derivatives to find new simple organic molecules generating circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), the study observes asymmetry ratios g of the order 10^(-3) in luminescence, similar to the absorption case. TD-DFT calculations provide insight into the molecular orbitals responsible for transitions in the observed signals of these molecules, explaining the behaviors of the |g(lum)|/|g(abs)| ratios.

Quantifying the Overall Efficiency of Circularly Polarized Emitters

Lorenzo Arrico et al.

Summary: This study introduces a new concept of CPL brightness (B-CPL), which takes into consideration the absorption extinction coefficient and quantum yield in addition to the g(lum) factor, to comprehensively evaluate the efficiency of CPL emitters. By calculating B-CPL values for over 180 compounds and analyzing the data distribution for main classes of CPL molecular emitters, this tool can aid in contextualizing new CPL active compounds and guiding the selection of molecular systems for specific CPL applications.

Pathways to increase the dissymmetry in the interaction of chiral light and chiral molecules

Jake L. Greenfield et al.

Summary: The dissymmetric interaction between circularly polarised light and chiral molecules is important across various fields, but the selectivity in absorption or emission of left-handed versus right-handed CP light is often low. Strategies to enhance this interaction include molecular design, modification of light, and creating macroscopic chiral structures, offering hope for advancements in research involving interactions of chiral molecules and light.
