Proton Conductive Mononuclear Hydrogen-Bonded Cobalt(II) Spin Crossover Complex

Fumiya Kobayashi et al.

Summary: In this study, a mononuclear hydrogen-bonded Co(II) spin crossover compound was demonstrated to exhibit high proton conductivity. The compound showed complex 3D supramolecular structure and magnetic behavior, and displayed a proton conductivity of 1.68 x 10-3 S cm-1 at 353 K and 98% relative humidity. This study provides new insights for the design of molecular proton conductors and contributes to the development of multifunctional molecular switching materials.

Sequential Activation of Molecular and Macroscopic Spin-State Switching within the Hysteretic Region Following Pulsed Light Excitation

Karl Ridier et al.

Summary: Molecular spin-crossover (SCO) compounds are a promising class of photoactive materials that exhibit efficient photoinduced phase transitions (PIPT). Through the study of the spatiotemporal dynamics of a single crystal PIPT within the thermodynamic metastability region, it was found that the PIPT occurs through the sequential activation of two switching mechanisms on sub-microsecond and millisecond timescales. The main discovery is that thermodynamic metastability has no influence on the sub-millisecond switching dynamics.

Electrical Sensing of the Thermal and Light-Induced Spin Transition in Robust Contactless Spin-Crossover/Graphene Hybrid Devices

Miguel Gavara-Edo et al.

Summary: Hybrid devices based on spin-crossover/2D heterostructures provide a sensitive platform to detect spin transitions and tune the properties of 2D materials. However, the fragility of spin-crossover materials and the limitations of processing methods have restricted their applicability. This study presents an easily processable and robust hybrid device, where sublimable spin-crossover [Fe(Pyrz)(2)] molecules are deposited on chemical vapor deposition graphene. By growing an elusive polymorph of [Fe(Pyrz)(2)] on graphene, a fast and effective light-induced spin transition in the devices can be electrically detected.

Impact of Counteranion on Reversible Spin-State Switching in a Series of Cobalt(II) Complexes Containing a Redox-Active Ethylenedioxythiophene-Based Terpyridine Ligand

Subrata Ghosh et al.

Summary: The self-assembly of a redox-active ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT)-terpyridine-based tridentate ligand and cobalt(II) unit with different counteranions has led to a series of new cobalt(II) complexes. The impact of various counteranions on stabilization and spin-state switching of the cobalt(II) center was explored. The results revealed that the non-covalent cation-anion interactions played a significant role in stabilizing the spin-state and the complexes exhibited reversible spin-state switching behavior.

Spin crossover phenomena in long chain alkylated complexes

Ryohei Akiyoshi et al.

Summary: Soft materials such as polymers, liquid crystals, and colloids exhibit unique functionalities derived from their non-rigid structures. Soft metal complexes with long alkyl chains show synergy between structural dynamics and electron dynamics. This review focuses on spin crossover behaviors associated with structural phase transitions in soft metal complexes, including liquid crystal transitions. Fabrication of soft materials based on spin crossover complexes is also discussed.
