A Donor-Acceptor 10-Cycloparaphenylene and Its Use as an Emitter in an Organic Light-Emitting Diode

Dongyang Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigated the possibility of utilizing cycloparaphenylenes (CPP) in a donor-acceptor TADF emitter design. The compound 4PXZPh-[10]CPP, which contains four electron-donating groups connected to a [10]CPP, exhibited sky-blue emission with a wavelength of 475 nm and a photoluminescence efficiency of 29% in a 15 wt% doped CzSi film. Solution-processed OLEDs incorporating 4PXZPh-[10]CPP displayed sky-blue emission with a wavelength of 465 nm and a maximum external quantum efficiency of 1.0%.

Cleavage of non-polar C(sp2)-C(sp2) bonds in cycloparaphenylenes via electric field-catalyzed electrophilic aromatic substitution

Junfeng Lin et al.

Summary: Electrophilic aromatic substitution (EAS) is a fundamental reaction in organic chemistry, and using an oriented external electric field (OEEF) instead of traditional reagents can provide an environmentally friendly method to synthesize aromatic compounds. In this work, OEEF-catalyzed EAS reactions in CPPs were demonstrated, showing the feasibility of OEEF catalysis and offering a way to explore new mechanistic principles of classic organic reactions aided by OEEF.

A molecular Popeye: Li+@C60 and its complexes with [n]cycloparaphenylenes

Markus Freiberger et al.

Summary: In this study, the stability of [n]cycloparaphenylene (nCPP)-based host-guest complexes with Li+@C-60 and C-60 was compared for the first time in both gas and solution phases. Results showed a significant increase in stability for the complexes featuring [9-12]CPP with Li+@C-60, which was also observed in solution. The formation of [10]CPP superset of Li+@C-60 exhibited a two orders of magnitude larger association constant compared to the C-60 analog, along with an increased binding entropy. This research contributes to a better understanding of host-guest complexes between [n]CPPs and endohedral metallofullerenes at a molecular level.

Splitting the Ring: Impact of Ortho and Meta Pi Conjugation Pathways through Disjointed [8]Cycloparaphenylene Electronic Materials

Eric Peterson et al.

Summary: This study describes the synthesis and electronic properties of small-molecule and polymeric [8]cycloparaphenylenes ([8]CPPs) with disjointed pi-conjugated substituents. The results demonstrate the emergence of new electronic states and reveal the involvement of multiple radial/linear conjugation pathways in these systems.

Cationic Gold(II) Complexes: Experimental and Theoretical Study

Jaya Mehara et al.

Summary: Gold(II) complexes are not commonly used in catalyzing chemical transformations due to their easy oxidation or reduction to more stable gold(III) or gold(I) complexes. In this study, we investigated the thermodynamics, stability, and spectral properties of [Au-II(L)(X)](+) complexes (L=ligand, X=halogen) in the gas phase. It was found that bidentate and tridentate ligands with nitrogen donor atoms are the best choices for stabilizing gaseous [Au-II(L)(X)](+) complexes. Quantum chemical calculations revealed that the molecular and electronic structures, as well as the spectroscopic properties, of the investigated gold(II) complexes are similar to those of stable copper(II) complexes.

Room-Temperature-Stable Magnesium Electride via Ni(II) Reduction

Craig S. Day et al.

Summary: In this study, we report the synthesis of highly reduced bipyridyl magnesium complexes and the first stable organic magnesium electride supported by quantum mechanical computations and X-ray diffraction. These complexes act as unconventional homogeneous reductants due to their high solubility, modular redox potentials, and formation of insoluble, non-coordinating byproducts. The applicability of these reductants is demonstrated by accessing low-valent (bipy)2Ni(0) species that are otherwise challenging to access.

Single cycloparaphenylene molecule devices: Achieving large conductance modulation via tuning radial π-conjugation

Yaxin Lv et al.

Summary: The conjugated macrocycles cycloparaphenylenes (CPPs) exhibit high conductance and large tunneling attenuation coefficient, especially at small ring sizes. Radially pi-conjugated molecular systems offer a larger conductance modulation range than standard linear molecules, making them a potential platform for building molecular devices with highly tunable transport behaviors.
