Opioid Use Among Patients With Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Blake Niccum et al.

Summary: In a systematic review and meta-analysis, it was found that 21% of outpatients with IBD (and 62% of hospitalized patients) are opioid users. Opioid use is associated with more severe IBD and increased healthcare use, suggesting urgent interventions are needed to reduce opioid use and improve disease-related outcomes.

Abdominal pain in quiescent inflammatory bowel disease

Matthew D. Coates et al.

Summary: In patients with quiescent IBD, the use of corticosteroids, presence of anxiety/depression, and being female were independently associated with the condition. Compared to those with active disease, quiescent IBD patients were more likely to use antidepressants and less likely to have elevated levels of inflammatory markers, although a significant portion still exhibited pathological elevation in at least one marker. New noninvasive screening methods are needed for this condition.
