Inflammatory bowel disease patient-reported quality assessment should drive service improvement: A national survey of UK IBD units and patients

A. Barney Hawthorne et al.

Summary: This study assessed patients' experience of IBD and the healthcare they received, aiming to identify factors associated with perceived high-quality care. The results showed that the perceived quality of care varied with age, gender, and time since diagnosis. Factors associated with patient-reported high-quality care included being in a tertiary center, availability of patient information, shared decision-making, rapid response to advice, access to urgent review, joint medical/surgical clinics, and access to research. The presence of IBD nurse specialists was strongly associated with regular reviews, self-management confidence, and high-quality care.

Factors associated with poor compliance amongst hospitalized, predominantly adolescent pediatric Crohn's disease patients

Nathaniel A. Cohen et al.

Summary: In this study, mental health disorders and smoking were independently associated with non-compliance to medication in predominantly adolescent, hospitalized pediatric CD patients. A multidisciplinary approach involving pediatric gastroenterologists, psychiatrists, and addiction specialists is needed to treat the underlying causes and improve adherence in these patients.

The association between inflammatory bowel disease and mental ill health: A retrospective cohort study using data from UK primary care

Nosheen Umar et al.

Summary: This population-based retrospective cohort study shows that patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are at a higher risk of developing mental illnesses, including deliberate self-harm, depression, anxiety, and insomnia. The incidence rate ratios of mental illnesses are particularly high in the first year following IBD diagnosis. IBD is independently associated with an increased risk of deliberate self-harm.

Mental Health Costs of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Eva Szigethy et al.

Summary: This study revealed that inflammatory bowel disease patients with mental health diagnoses incurred higher healthcare utilization and costs, especially in terms of emergency visits and inpatient care. Effective behavioral health screening and intervention may help reduce healthcare costs and improve the course of care for IBD patients.

Mental Health Costs of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Eva Szigethy et al.

Summary: Mental health diagnoses (MHDs) are a significant cost driver for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), influencing demographic traits, medical utilization, and annualized costs of care in patients. This study compared IBD patients with and without MHDs based on insurance claims data, revealing higher costs and different patterns of healthcare utilization among patients with MHDs.
