Control of protein stability by post-translational modifications

Ji Min Lee et al.

Summary: Post-translational modifications (PTMs) on specific amino acids control the stability of target proteins. These PTM-regulated degrons act as signals for protein degradation or stabilization. This review summarizes the current knowledge of PTM-mediated protein stability regulation to enhance the identification of novel drug targets.

Towards a Four-Component GMMA-Based Vaccine against Shigella

Francesca Micoli et al.

Summary: Shigellosis is a major public health problem, especially in low- and middle-income countries, causing diarrhoeal disease primarily in young children. The increasing cases of Shigella with antimicrobial resistance are concerning. Currently, there are no widely available licensed vaccines against Shigella, but several candidates are being developed. This article presents the development of a potential low-cost four-component Shigella vaccine that uses GMMA technology to deliver the O-antigen to the immune system for broad protection.

Listeria ilorinensis sp. nov., isolated from cow milk cheese in Nigeria

Ibrahim Adisa Raufu et al.

Summary: During microbial assessment of cow milk cheese products in Ilorin, Nigeria, a new species of Listeria was discovered. This isolate showed highest similarity to Listeria costaricensis and was named Listeria ilorinensis. It differs from L. costaricensis phenotypically and is proposed to be non-pathogenic for humans and animals.

Summary: SUMO polymers regulate various nuclear processes through dynamic signal transduction, including protein degradation. The fate of target proteins is influenced by the structure of SUMO polymers. Recent studies have demonstrated the diversity of SUMO polymer signal transduction for proteolytic and nonproteolytic purposes.

Calpain-calpastatin system and cancer progression

Hong Nian et al.

Summary: The calpain system plays crucial roles in cancer progression by mediating the proteolysis of specific substrates and regulating important signaling molecules. mu-calpain, m-calpain, and calpastatin are the three molecules initially identified as components of the calpain system, with roles in cancer progression through regulation of cellular processes and potential as targets for anti-cancer interventions.

Prevalence and multidrug resistance in Salmonella enterica Typhimurium: an overview in South East Asia

Saumya Darshana Patra et al.

Summary: This review discusses the epidemiology and multidrug resistance of Salmonella Typhimurium in 11 countries of South East Asia. Vietnam ranks top in terms of prevalence and antimicrobial resistance, while some countries such as Brunei and Timor Leste have not conducted studies on the incidence and drug resistance of this pathogen. Despite not being the dominant serovar in the region in the past 20 years, evidence suggests that Salmonella Typhimurium remains a major threat in South East Asia due to infection in humans and contamination in animals and food sources, as well as its resistance to multiple antibiotics.

Staphylococcus aureus Decreases SUMOylation Host Response to Promote Intramacrophage Survival

Nadhuma Youssouf et al.

Summary: During S. aureus infection, the bacterium decreases SUMOylation in infected macrophages, which is correlated with reduced levels of the SUMO-conjugating enzyme Ubc9. Over-expression of SUMO proteins inhibits bacterial intracellular proliferation, while inhibition of SUMOylation promotes it. These findings reveal the impact of host SUMOylation response on S. aureus infection for the first time.

Prevalence, Antibiogram and Genetic Characterization of Listeria monocytogenes from Food Products in Egypt

Eman E. Abdeen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the prevalence, antimicrobial susceptibility, virulence determination, and genetic characteristics of Listeria monocytogenes in different food products from Menoufiya governorate in Egypt. L. monocytogenes was found in 6.8% of the tested food samples, displaying high susceptibility to some antibiotics while showing multidrug resistance. The genetic analysis showed high nucleotide similarity with global clones and clustered with other Listeria species.
