Shixu Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, a lignin structure-designed hydrophobic film (LSHF) was successfully fabricated through solvent/anti-solvent self-assembly and auto-adhesion of acetic acid lignin (AL) on the surface of a lignocellulose film (LCF). The LSHF had a rough surface composed of lignin colloidal spheres, which significantly improved the water contact angle (WCA) and exhibited a more stable WCA decrease compared to the LCF. Furthermore, the auto-adhesion of lignin endowed the LSHF with a higher tensile strength.

Summary: This study aimed to replace EPDM and carbon black with microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) and lignin in specified amounts to investigate the properties of EPDM elastomers. The results showed that the introduction of MCC and lignin increased elastic modulus and tear strength, but decreased tensile strength. Minor chemical shifts and lower thermal stability were observed. In addition, MCC and lignin facilitated the vulcanization process and dispersed homogeneously in the matrix. All mechanical values were within the specified standard after the replacement of MCC and lignin.

Andrey A. Tyuftin et al.

Summary: The production of traditional packaging materials has caused significant pollution, hence Edible/Biodegradable/Compostable (EBC) films may serve as sustainable alternatives. Bovine gelatin, a major protein group in EBC materials, requires knowledge and control of barrier properties for potential industrial use. However, lack of experimental standardization in existing literature hindered comparison of gelatin barrier properties, indicating a need for further research with standardized units.

Recent advances in nanocellulose processing, functionalization and applications: a review

Vaishali Thakur et al.

Summary: The text discusses the increasing concern for environmental and ecological issues due to the expansion of petroleum-based synthetic materials, and the growing interest in developing novel synthetic materials with ecofriendly and economical properties. Nanocellulose, a biopolymer derived from various plant species and agricultural waste products, is highlighted for its remarkable properties and wide range of applications, such as bio-sensing and drug delivery, due to its unique characteristics. Various pretreatment methods can be employed to extract nanocellulose from cellulosic waste, and surface functionalization techniques, such as phosphorylation and acetylation, further enhance its potential for applications in various fields.

Direct Ink Writing of Hierarchically Porous Cellulose/Alginate Monolithic Hydrogel as a Highly Effective Adsorbent for Environmental Applications

Jun Yuan et al.

Summary: A simple method for designing printable cellulose-based inks by adding sodium alginate (SA) to the formulation was proposed in this study, and hierarchically porous cellulose/alginate monolithic hydrogel (CAH) for highly effective adsorption of methylene blue (MB) was manufactured. Characterization results confirmed the successful preparation of CAH and identified hydrogen bond interaction and electrostatic interaction as the dominant mechanisms for MB removal onto CAH. The results suggest that the 3D-printed CAH could be a high-potential material for environmental applications.
