Silica incorporated cellulose fibres as green concept for textiles with reduced flammability

Barbara Paul et al.

Summary: This study presents a clean technology for reducing flammability in viscose fibers by incorporating 20%wt of silica into the fiber matrix during formation. Treatment with aluminate successfully stabilizes the silica against leaching during washing procedures, and can be combined with reactive dyeing without affecting dye precipitation or color fastness. The incorporation of silica offers a greener alternative to current polluting finishing processes for regenerated cellulose fibers, particularly beneficial for skin-contact textiles to avoid leaching of irritating flame retardants.

Peng Qi et al.

Summary: In this study, a sustainable flame retardant and superhydrophobic cotton fabric was prepared using chitosan and sodium polyborate treatment, followed by PDMS treatment. The fabric demonstrated enhanced flame retardancy and superhydrophobic properties, as well as anti-sticking, self-cleaning, and oil/water-separating capabilities. This coating method, free from F, Cl, Br, and P elements, is considered a clean approach for producing functional cotton fabrics.

Flame retardation of polyester/cotton blended fabrics via intumescent sol-gel coatings

Bin Wang et al.

Summary: An intumescent coating called DAM was constructed by modifying 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane with amino phosphonates and melamine through neutralization reaction, and then deposited on the fabric surface as a homogeneous coating using the sol-gel technique. DAM exhibited good flame retardancy in both horizontal and vertical flame tests.

Ultrastrong and flame-retardant microfibers via microfluidic wet spinning of phosphorylated cellulose nanofibrils

Ning Ren et al.

Summary: Ultrastrong and flame-retardant microfibers were obtained through microfluidic wet spinning of phosphorylated cellulose nanofibrils (PCNFs). The as-prepared microfibers demonstrated high mechanical properties and retained >85% strength in wet hydration state. Glycerol and egg yolk were introduced to enhance the modulus, strength, and strain to failure. The study expands the potential applications of nanocellulose microfibers in biomedical and flame-retardant materials.

Yang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study aims to explore the relationship between exposure to organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) and cognitive impairment in the elderly population. Through a case-control study based on the Shenzhen Aging-related Disorder Cohort, it was found that specific m-OPFRs metabolites in urine samples were positively associated with lower cognitive function. Additionally, a nonlinear dose-response relationship between urinary BDCIPP concentration and cognitive decline was observed.

A rapid, green method for the preparation of cellulosic self-reinforcing composites from wood and bamboo pulp

Yucheng Hu et al.

Summary: Utilizing a new green aqueous solvent, cellulosic self-reinforcing composites (CSRCs) were rapidly obtained by partially dissolving wood and bamboo pulp at 8 degrees C. The solvent system was found to hinder the self-reinforcing process by affecting lignin and degree of polymerization. Characterization through various methods revealed cellulose I was partially replaced by cellulose II, leading to a significant increase in tensile strength.
