Mild organosolv pretreatment of sugarcane bagasse with acetone/phenoxyethanol/water for enhanced sugar production

Wuhuan Li et al.

Summary: This study utilized acetone/phenoxyethanol/water (APW) solutions to pretreat sugarcane bagasse and improve sugar production in enzymatic hydrolysis. The optimal pretreatment conditions were determined to be 125 degrees C-120 min, 0.17 M H2SO4, and a liquid-solid ratio of 15, resulting in high lignin removal and cellulose digestibility. The APW process also showed effective fractionation of other biomass feedstocks, such as pine, corn stalk, and bamboo.

Nuclear magnetic resonance analysis of ascorbic acid assisted lignocellulose decomposition in dilute acid pretreatment and its stimulation on enzymatic hydrolysis

Yequan Sheng et al.

Summary: The addition of ascorbic acid enhances lignin decomposition and cellulose conversion in dilute acid pretreatment, with a dose-dependent effect. NMR analysis shows that ascorbic acid significantly stimulates decomposed lignins compared to residual bulk lignins, leading to increased cellulose conversion. Therefore, ascorbic acid can improve the cellulose conversion rate of pretreated materials.

Effects of formaldehyde on fermentable sugars production in the low-cost pretreatment of corn stalk based on ionic liquids

Kaili Zhang et al.

Summary: A low cost system composed of [C(4)C(1)im]Cl, HCl, and FA was developed for the pretreatment of corn stalk, showing great potential for substituting volatile organic solvents and improving economic efficiency in lignocellulosic biomass processing. The addition of FA stabilized the process, decreasing acid-hydrolysis of carbohydrates while effectively removing lignin.

Alleviating lignin repolymerization by carbocation scavenger for effective production of fermentable sugars from combined liquid hot water and green-liquor pretreated softwood biomass

Meysam Madadi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of three additives on enhancing the effectiveness of combined pretreatment of pine-wood biomass, showing that additives could alter the physicochemical structure of lignin, alleviate the inhibitory effect of lignin repolymerization, and notably increase sugar yield. The findings suggest that additives play a crucial role in reducing lignin repolymerization and improving cellulose accessibility for high production of fermentable sugars and bioethanol in softwood biomass.

Summary: This review discusses the pre-processing procedures used in biomass thermal conversion techniques and summarizes the main issues encountered and the most commonly used solutions. The findings show that pre-processing methods can improve efficiency and prevent depletion of non-renewable resources. Torrefaction, hydrothermal processing, gasification, etc. are the most important thermal conversion techniques, and wood and woody biomass are the major types of biomass used.

Solubility of Biocompounds 2,5-Furandicarboxylic Acid and 5-Formylfuran-2-Carboxylic Acid in Binary Solvent Mixtures of Water and 1,4-Dioxane

Linli Xu et al.

Summary: This study measured the solubility of 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) and its synthetic intermediates (e.g., 5-formylfuran-2-carboxylic acid, FFCA) in binary water + 1,4-dioxane mixtures and investigated their dissolution mechanisms. The results showed that the solubility of FDCA and FFCA increases with temperature and pure 1,4-dioxane dissolves more solutes than pure water. Additionally, the study observed co-solvency phenomena and changes in solvation mechanisms.

Characterization of lignin streams during ionic liquid/hydrochloric acid/formaldehyde pretreatment of corn stalk

Kaili Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of formaldehyde in inhibiting lignin condensation during corn stalk pretreatment with [C4C1im]Cl/HCl system. Formaldehyde addition affected the structural features of lignin and the composition of degraded products significantly. Stabilization by formaldehyde was unfavorable for the cleavage of ?-O-4 bonds, leading to the extraction of lignin with low S/G ratio and high molecular weight in the [C4C1im]Cl/HCl/FA system.
