Impact of Lactic Acid Bacteria Fermentation on Phenolic Compounds and Antioxidant Activity of Avocado Leaf Extracts

Soumi De Montijo-Prieto et al.

Summary: The global consumption of avocados is increasing, leading to a large amount of agro wastes. Various management approaches are available for the recovery of bioactive compounds from these wastes. Lactic acid fermentation was used in this study to enhance the nutritional potential and value of avocado leaves. The fermentation process led to an increase in the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of the leaves. Different lactic acid bacteria strains showed varying levels of antioxidant activity and induced changes in the phenolic compound profile of the leaves. Overall, the results suggest that lactic acid bacteria can improve the bioavailability of phenolic compounds through enzymatic activity.

A pectocellulosic bioplastic from fruit processing waste: robust, biodegradable, and recyclable

Shikai Zhang et al.

Summary: Recyclable and biodegradable bioplastics made from biomass resources, specifically citrus peels, have been developed using a novel top-down strategy. The bioplastics show excellent mechanical properties, easy recycling, and rapid biodegradation due to the lamellae structure formed by cross-linked pectin and cellulose micro/nanofibers. The pectocellulosic bioplastics also exhibit water stability, water vapor barrier properties, and antioxidant activity, making them potential substitutes for petrochemical-derived plastics in active food packaging.

Development of gelatin/carboxymethylcellulose active films containing Hass avocado peel extract and their application as a packaging for the preservation of berries

Maria Fernanda Vargas-Torrico et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of incorporating avocado peel extracts (EE-AP) into gelatin-carboxymethylcellulose (Gel-CMC) films on their physicochemical properties and antifungal activity, as well as their applicability in berry preservation. The results showed that EE-AP was compatible with Gel-CMC films and improved their mechanical properties. The 200 mg/L concentration of EE-AP offered the best barrier properties against water vapor. The film with EE-AP incorporation showed decreased moisture content and solubility, as well as enhanced colorimetric parameters and opacity. The films also exhibited excellent UV-visible light barrier properties and high antioxidant and antifungal activity. Overall, Gel-CMC films with EE-AP have the potential for active packaging and fresh fruit preservation.

Measurement of the Water Vapor Permeability of Chitosan Films: A Laboratory Experiment on Food Packaging Materials

Patricia Cazon et al.

Summary: In recent years, there has been a significant shift in the food industry towards biodegradable packaging driven by social and environmental demands. This laboratory exercise aims to provide undergraduate students with a tool to actively learn about new technologies and trends in biopolymer chemistry. The focus of the exercise is on barrier properties, particularly water vapor permeability, using chitosan as an example. Detailed instructions are provided for the synthesis of chitosan and measurement of its water vapor permeability. Additionally, a 3D printing guide for a temperature-controlled permeability chamber is included to save time during the experiment. This exercise and the accompanying Supporting Information are expected to be valuable resources for biopolymer teaching and research laboratories.

Thermodynamics and kinetics of moisture transport in bitumen

Lili Ma et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the kinetics and thermodynamics of moisture transport in different types of bitumen under various temperature and relative humidity conditions. Transport models are introduced to study the mechanisms of moisture transport. The results show that clustering of water molecules in bitumen occurs at higher relative humidity levels, leading to a decrease in the diffusion coefficient. The S-Cluster model provides a detailed explanation of the moisture transport mechanisms and performs better at high sorption levels.
