Influence of augmentation of biochar during anaerobic co-digestion of Chlorella vulgaris and cellulose

Jessica Quintana-Najera et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of inoculum-to-substrate ratio, C/N ratio, and biochar load on anaerobic co-digestion of microalgae for biomethane production. Initial addition of biochar at specific ISR and C/N ratios showed improved biomethane yields. Factors such as higher ISR and C/N ratios favored AcoD, while increased biochar load reduced biomethane yield but enhanced production rate. The factorial design highlighted the importance of biochar load in AcoD.

Effect of biochar-derived DOM on the interaction between Cu(II) and biochar prepared at different pyrolysis temperatures

Xujing Guo et al.

Summary: The structure and composition of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter varied significantly at different pyrolysis temperatures, impacting the binding properties of Cu(II) onto walnut-shell DOM. The preferential Cu(II) binding with fulvic-like and protein-like substances at different temperatures were observed, suggesting that pyrolysis temperature plays a crucial role in heavy metal behavior. The presence of DOM influenced the adsorption behavior of biochar towards Cu(II).

Insight into the effects of biological treatment on the binding properties of copper onto dissolved organic matter derived from coking wastewater

Benlin Dai et al.

Summary: Biological treatment effectively removes total organic carbon and dissolved organic matter in coking wastewater, and influences the behavior of heavy metals. A novel spectral data processing method accurately identifies small features and binding sites in the samples. The biological treatment increases the chemical stability of DOM-Cu(II) complexes, reducing the environmental risk.

Enhancing thermophilic anaerobic co-digestion of sewage sludge and food waste with biogas residue biochar

Hongbo Liu et al.

Summary: Biochar addition to anaerobic digestion systems improves methane production, and the residues of anaerobic digestion can be recycled into new biochar. The study found that the residue biochar produced the highest methane yield, possibly due to its higher abundance of basic groups and electroactive microorganisms.

Environmental Risk and Management of Herbal-Extraction Residues Induced by the Composition and Metal Binding Properties of DOM

Donghai Yuan et al.

Summary: As the consumption of Chinese medicine resources increases, the waste of traditional Chinese medicine extraction cannot be disposed of reasonably, which has a serious impact on the environment. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in herbal extraction residue can bind to heavy metals (HMs), creating potential environmental risks. This study found that protein-like substances are dominant in the residual DOM of Chinese medicine extracts, becoming the main factor of water quality deterioration. The N-H groups in the protein-like materials prioritize binding with Cu(II). The study emphasizes the importance of continuous attention to the impact of herbal extraction residue on the geochemical behavior of HMs.

Binding characteristics of copper onto biochar-derived DOM using general, heterospectral and moving-window two-dimensional correlation analyses

Jun Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the binding characteristics between sludge BDOM and Cu(II) using fluorescence and infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that hydrophilic groups had a stronger binding affinity with Cu(II) than hydrophobic groups in BDOM. Fluorescence components played a decisive role in the binding of Cu(II) with trace concentration, while infrared functional groups made a substantial contribution in the complexation of Cu(II) with higher concentration.

Tourmaline enhanced methane yield via regulating microbial metabolic balance during anaerobic co-digestion of corn stover and cow manure

Qing Wang et al.

Summary: This study conducted a pilot-scale experiment to investigate the effects of substrate ratio, tourmaline concentration, and high-temperature thermally modified material on the anaerobic co-digestion of corn stover and cow manure. The results showed that a corn stover-to-cow manure feeding ratio of 2:1 resulted in higher methane yield. Microbial diversity analysis revealed that adding low doses of tourmaline regulated the distribution of microorganisms, with Methanobacteria becoming the dominant methanogenic archaea in the fermentation broth.
