A high-stable soybean-oil-based epoxy acrylate emulsion stabilized by silanized nanocrystalline cellulose as a sustainable paper coating for enhanced water vapor barrier

Xuwang Tian et al.

Summary: This study successfully achieved a stable dispersion of acrylated epoxidized soybean oil (AESO) in water by using 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) modified nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC), which synergistically improved the water vapor barrier properties of paper after coating. APTES-NCC exhibited better interface compatibility with AESO, improved hydrophobicity and wettability, and acted as an effective emulsifier. The resulting APTES-NCC/AESO emulsion coated on paper reduced the water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) significantly.

Trends and challenges in the development of bio-based barrier coating materials for paper/cardboard food packaging; a review

Muhammad Mujtaba et al.

Summary: Currently, the widespread use of petroleum-based synthetic plastics in packaging has harmful effects on human health, marine life, and the ecosystem. Biobased alternatives are being explored as sustainable options for packaging due to their biodegradability, non-toxicity, and flexibility. These alternatives, either alone or in composites, exhibit strong barrier properties against various elements. However, the commercialization of biobased polymers for barrier coatings is facing challenges despite the rapid technological advancements in bioplastics. Improving existing techniques and developing new nanocomposites hold promise for achieving better barrier qualities.

Anchor and bridge functions of APTES layer on interface between hydrophilic starch films and hydrophobic soyabean oil coating

Ying Chen et al.

Summary: Research shows that the adhesion between starch film and bio-based acrylated epoxidized soyabean oil (AESO) coating was significantly improved after using (3Aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) to enhance the bonding, with the interfacial adhesion strength increasing over 4 times after treatment with 1.6 wt% APTES. The starch films treated with APTES and AESO coating remained intact after soaking in water for more than 2 hours.
