Controllable fabrication of superhydrophobic alloys surface on 304 stainless steel substrate for anti-icing performance

Yuanting Deng et al.

Summary: In this study, a 304 stainless steel-based ZnO seed layer was prepared using sol-gel method or electrochemical deposition, and a superhydrophobic nano-ZnO surface was created on its surface through hydrothermal method. The results showed that different seed layer preparation methods led to different structural morphologies of the 304SS-based ZnO surface. In static icing test, the CSS-ZnO surface exhibited the best anti-icing performance, prolonging icing time at -5°C and delaying ice formation at -10°C and -15°C. In dynamic icing test, the CSS-ZnO surface also showed significant anti-icing effect. The study illustrated the mechanism of water droplet condensation inhibition by superhydrophobic surfaces and provided practical applications for enhancing anti-icing ability of 304SS surfaces in industry.
