Techno-economic assessment of hydrotreated vegetable oil as a renewable fuel from waste sludge palm oil

Cui Jun Hor et al.

Summary: Biodiesel production has limitations, but hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) can overcome these limitations. Waste sludge palm oil (SPO) was used as a feedstock for HVO production. The study shows that SPO-HVO production can reduce CO2 emissions and total annual production cost.

Modelling of methane sorption enhanced reforming for blue hydrogen production in an adiabatic fixed bed reactor: unravelling the role of the reactor's thermal behavior

Abdelrahman Mostafa et al.

Summary: In this study, methane sorption enhanced reforming (SER) is investigated as a promising route for blue H2 production. A 1-D dynamic heterogeneous model is developed to evaluate the thermal behavior of a fixed bed reactor under adiabatic conditions. The effects of feed gas temperature, initial bed temperature, and bed thermal capacity on the process performances are studied.

Decarbonising the refinery sector: A socio-technical analysis of advanced biofuels, green hydrogen and carbon capture and storage developments in Sweden

Anissa Nurdiawati et al.

Summary: The oil refinery industry is under pressure to adapt to changing market conditions by transitioning to low-carbon technologies such as advanced biofuels, green hydrogen, and CCS. Although the development of these technologies faces challenges, advanced biofuels are relatively mature, while green hydrogen and CCS show potential for development but lack policy support for market formation.

Total Site Hydrogen Integration with fresh hydrogen of multiple quality and waste hydrogen recovery in refineries

Limei Gai et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel method that combines Pinch Methodology and waste hydrogen recovery to minimize fresh hydrogen consumption and waste hydrogen discharge. The method extends the multiple-level resource Pinch Analysis to Total Site Hydrogen Integration, considering fresh hydrogen sources with different qualities. A case study of a refinery hydrogen network in a petrochemical industrial park demonstrates the technical feasibility and economic benefits of various purification approaches. The results show a reduction of 21.3% in fresh hydrogen usage, 67.6% in waste hydrogen discharge, and a hydrogen recovery ratio of 95.2% in the Total Site Hydrogen Integration with waste hydrogen purification.

Hydrogen Production with In Situ CO2 Capture at High and Medium Temperatures Using Solid Sorbents

Paula Teixeira et al.

Summary: Hydrogen is a versatile vector for various applications, and the capture of CO2 during production process is crucial in minimizing carbon footprint. Steam methane reforming and coal gasification are the main technologies for H-2 production, and in situ CO2 capture is especially profitable as it contributes to additional production of H-2.

Recent advances on materials and processes for intensified production of blue hydrogen

Andy N. Antzaras et al.

Summary: Steam reforming of natural gas is the main method for large-scale hydrogen production, but it has high energy requirements and carbon footprint. Therefore, the development of alternative reforming methods, such as chemical looping reforming and sorption enhanced reforming, has gained interest. This paper critically reviews the feasibility, required materials, and strategies to improve the performance of these novel reforming concepts for intensified blue hydrogen production, and also discusses research efforts on hybrid processes combining the advantages of different intensified concepts.
