Advanced carbon molecular sieve membranes derived from molecularly engineered cross-linkable copolyimide for gas separations

Zhongyun Liu et al.

Summary: Reported are carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes derived from structurally engineered cross-linkable copolyimide, enabling precise molecular discrimination and scalability for energy-efficient gas separations. The CMS membranes with kinked backbones and cross-linkable backbones demonstrate improved gas separation performance due to controlled pyrolysis conditions. These membranes provide a versatile platform for challenging gas separations and hold promise for environmentally friendly applications.

Finely tuning the microporosity in phosphoric acid doped triptycene-containing polybenzimidazole membranes for highly permselective helium and hydrogen recovery

Yang Jiao et al.

Summary: In this study, high-performance polybenzimidazole (PBI) membranes were developed with well-defined microporosity and size-sieving ability for helium and hydrogen recovery. The incorporation of hierarchical triptycene units and polyprotic acid doping resulted in significantly enhanced gas permeability and selectivity compared to previous PBI membranes. The triptycene-based polybenzimidazole (TPBI) composite membranes exhibited the highest gas selectivities among existing polymeric gas separation membranes, making them highly attractive for helium and hydrogen separation.

Coordination enhancement of hydrogen and helium recovery in polybenzimidazole-based carbon molecular sieve membranes

Yang Jiao et al.

Summary: The gas separation performance of carbon molecular sieve (CMS) membranes can be tuned by coordinating rare earth and imidazoles in the hierarchical triptycene-based polybenzimidazole (TPBI) precursor. By optimizing the pyrolysis condition and rare earth doping level, the resulting CMS membranes exhibited unprecedented H2 and He permeabilities and high gas selectivities. The enhancement of gas separation performance originated from the more pronounced hierarchically slit-like micropore structure, as well as the boosted diffusion and sorption selectivities.

Interfacially polymerized nanofilms with triptycene moieties and enhanced micropore interconnectivity for highly permselective gas separations

Ying Sun et al.

Summary: Highly crosslinked and microporous polymer nanofilms with finely tuned microporosity and interconnectivity were successfully designed and fabricated by incorporating bridged-bicyclic triptycene triamine moieties into interfacially polymerized networks. These nanofilms, featuring non-coplanar orientation and configurational free volume induced by triptycene, exhibited exceptional gas separation performance for He and H2 recovery, with higher permeances and selectivities compared to current state-of-the-art highly crosslinked TFC membranes. The microporosity and gas transport properties of the composite nanofilms were highly tailorable by regulating the reaction conditions. Incorporating hierarchical triptycene units with well-defined and interconnected microvoids provides the potential to fabricate highly permselective thinfilm composite membranes applicable for various important gas separations.
