Probing the Structure of Water at the Interface with Graphene Oxide Using Sum Frequency Generation Vibrational Spectroscopy

Yongming Hong et al.

Summary: The study utilized a face-up geometry of sum frequency generation (SFG) vibrational spectroscopy to deduce the water structure at the GO/water interface, finding that the OH stretching bands were predominant with high GO coverage due to the static electric field of the negatively charged GO surface.

Tuning the Wetting Properties of SiO2-Based Nanofluids to Create Durable Surfaces with Special Wettability for Self-Cleaning, Anti-Fouling, and Oil-Water Separation

Pouriya Esmaeilzadeh et al.

Summary: In this study, we successfully fabricated nanofluid coatings with superhydrophobic, superoleophobic, superhydrophilic/superoleophobic, and underwater superoleophobic properties using readily available materials like SiO2 nanoparticles and polydimethylsiloxane. These coatings exhibit excellent performance, including a static water contact angle of 170 degrees, bouncing of water droplets, and self-cleaning properties. Moreover, they also possess various functionalities, such as anti-fouling, self-cleaning, oil-resistance, and water-affinity. The coatings can be applied on different substrates, expanding their potential applications.

Liquid-Solid Interfaces under Dynamic Shear Flow: Recent Insights into the Interfacial Slip

Yongsheng Luo et al.

Summary: The development of micro/nanofluidic techniques has sparked interest in dynamic shear flow at liquid-solid interfaces. Recent research has shown that the slip of fluids relative to solid walls can be influenced by the liquid flow, but the prediction and control of flow in the boundary layer remains challenging. This Perspective summarizes recent advances in understanding the microscopic structures at liquid-solid interfaces under shear flow, with a focus on the application of sum frequency generation vibrational spectroscopy. The authors discuss possible approaches for controlling interfacial slip and highlight current challenges and opportunities.

Molecular Interactions between Amino Silane Adhesion Promoter and Acrylic Polymer Adhesive at Buried Silica Interfaces

John S. Andre et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of an amino silane on the interfacial structure and adhesion of copolymers to silica was investigated. The results showed that the amino silane could change the molecular structure of the polymer at the interface and form ionic bonds, which promoted the adhesion. These findings are important for understanding the mechanisms and effect of amino silanes on adhesion between acrylate polymers and glass substrates.

Electrochemically Regenerated Amine for CO2 Capture Driven by a Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Reaction

Wenchuan Jiang et al.

Summary: This article proposes an electrochemical CO2 capture method driven by a PCET reaction using amines as capture agents, replacing carbonates. The method achieves CO2 absorption and desorption through pH swing, and the energy consumption is reduced by 45.2% compared to the carbonate method. Experimental results show an energy cost of 21.0 kJ/mol.

Direct evidence of acid-base interactions in gecko adhesion

Saranshu Singla et al.

Summary: This study identified the involvement of acid-base interactions between polar lipid head-groups on gecko setal surfaces and sapphire, and demonstrated the role of cohesive failure within the lipid layer in reducing setal wear during high stress sliding. Absence of the lipid layer was found to enhance adhesion, despite a small setal-substrate contact area. These results challenge the traditional view that gecko adhesion is solely based on vdW forces and is residue-free.

Effect of Surfactants on the Molecular Structure of the Buried Oil/Water Interface

Saman Hosseinpour et al.

Summary: This study used surface-sensitive SFG spectroscopy to demonstrate that the adsorption of surfactants to the oil/water interface increases the interfacial electric field and enhances the ordering of interfacial oil molecules. At high surfactant concentrations, the interfacial charge peaks and the interfacial oil molecules arrange in a fully ordered conformation, leading to decreased interfacial tension and increased emulsion stability.
