Direct-air capture conversion of CO2 in fixed-bed microreactors with immobilized formate dehydrogenase and glucose dehydrogenase: Concept feasibility

Ion Iliuta et al.

Summary: This study proposes the conversion of CO2 from the atmosphere into formate via an enzyme-mediated process in fixed-bed microreactors. The enzymatic reduction of CO2 in these reactors allows for higher conversion rates. The study explores different operating conditions and enzyme loadings to optimize the CO2 conversion process.

Evaluation of intensified CO2 capture in packed-bed microreactors with immobilized carbonic anhydrase by combined theory and experiment

Ion Iliuta et al.

Summary: This study proposes an intensified CO2 capture method using an immobilized enzyme in a packed-bed microreactor. Experimental and theoretical analysis shows that the microreactor enhances mass transfer and improves CO2 conversion. Low enzyme loadings and specific buffer conditions favor CO2 capture. The performance of the microreactor surpasses that of traditional fixed-bed reactors and is suitable for green CO2 capture in various sectors.

Enhanced CO2 capture in packed-bed column bioreactors with immobilized carbonic anhydrase

Hannaneh Rasouli et al.

Summary: A novel enzymatic process using immobilized enzyme and magnetic nanoparticles in a packed-bed column bioreactor has been proposed to enhance CO2 absorption performance. The results demonstrated that the immobilized enzyme on the packing surface and magnetic nanoparticles exhibited high storage stability and could overcome the diffusion limitation of the enzyme on the packing surface. Overall, this technology design shows great potential for application.

Performance of catalytic cycloaddition of CO2 to styrene oxide in three-phase co-current (micro)fixed-bed and monolith reactors

Ion Iliuta et al.

Summary: This study investigates the design of three-phase catalytic reactors for the cycloaddition of CO2 to epoxides. The results show that fixed-bed microreactors outperform both fixed-bed and monolith reactors. Upflow monolithic reactors also show better performance due to reduced resistance to diffusion in the catalyst pore network. The improvement in catalytic process is mainly influenced by mass transfer.

Hollow Fibre Adsorption Unit for On-board Carbon Capture: The Key to Reducing Transport Emissions

Collette Larkin et al.

Summary: Transport sector is challenging to decarbonise, and carbon capture and storage (CCS) can be a solution. However, the size and weight of the capture system limit its application in vehicles. This study optimizes the sorbent-loading inside a compact hollow fibre adsorption unit (HFAU) for on-board CCS. Impregnation of alpha-Al2O3 hollow fibre supports with CaO is used to form the HFAUs. The performance of HFAUs is tested under simulated vehicle exhaust conditions, and the results show that HFAU3 with three impregnations achieves the highest CO2 adsorption capacity, demonstrating the potential of optimising CaO-loading to enhance performance and reduce sorbent requirements, unit size and costs.

Review on Carbon Capture in ICE Driven Transport

Alexander Garcia-Mariaca et al.

Summary: This study explores the challenges and methods of CO2 capture in internal combustion engine-driven transport, finding that temperature swing adsorption is the most suitable technology, and energy for CCS systems can be provided by utilizing waste heat. The case study demonstrates that a high carbon capture rate can be achieved without impacting engine performance, with a smaller space requirement compared to buses operating with hydrogen fuel cells.
