Adsorptive separation of butanol, acetone and ethanol in zeolite imidazolate frameworks with desirable pore apertures

Jing Wang et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the separation of ABE by using three hydrophobic zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) with different pore apertures. The results show that increasing the pore aperture decreases the adsorption amounts and affinity for acetone and ethanol, while increasing the adsorption of butanol with higher selectivities. ZIF-71, ZIF-11, and MAF-6 are promising adsorbents for ABE separation.

Ethylene glycol and glycolic acid production by wild-typeEscherichia coli

Xiyang Lu et al.

Summary: The study focused on producing ethylene glycol and glycolic acid using xylonic acid as a carbon source. It achieved high production yields through the biosynthesis pathways of Escherichia coli, and also constructed strains that specifically produce either ethylene glycol or glycolic acid. This provides new insights into the biosynthesis pathways of these chemicals and offers a novel approach to biomass utilization.

Increased Donnan exclusion in charged polymer networks at high salt concentrations

Kevin W. Gao et al.

Summary: The swelling of charged polymeric networks in electrolytic solutions was studied using a classical thermodynamic model. The well-established theory of Donnan exclusion was examined, which predicts that with increasing electrolyte concentration, the exclusion of electrolytes from the gel would decrease. However, the model predicts that the magnitude of Donnan exclusion actually increases with increasing electrolyte concentration in a broad range of parameter space.

Catalytic Production of Glycolic Acid from Glycerol Oxidation: An Optimization Using Response Surface Methodology

Claudia Patricia Tavera Ruiz et al.

Summary: This study aimed to optimize the production of glycolic acid from glycerol catalytic oxidation, finding that the optimal conditions included a temperature of 60 degrees C, NaOH/glycerol molar ratio of 2, O-2/glycerol molar ratio of 0.23, and catalyst/glycerol mass ratio of 0.07. By applying these conditions, the glycerol concentration was increased from 0.3 M to 2 M, resulting in an increase in glycolic acid concentration from 0.27 mol/L to 0.88 mol/L while maintaining 100% glycerol conversion.
