Simultaneous extraction and enrichment of sunset yellow dye in an aqueous two-phase system

Vivek Karma et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the extraction of Sunset Yellow (SSY) dye using a polymer-salt aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) as a green alternative to organic solvent-based extraction processes. The results show that by using polyethylene glycol and sodium sulfate as the polymer and salt phases, respectively, the dye can be selectively transferred and extracted. Experimental results demonstrate that 75% extraction can be achieved in 2 hours under diffusion-controlled conditions, while using a milli channel can accelerate the process and achieve 77% extraction in around 3 minutes. The use of slug flow in the microchannel helps improve mass transfer, leading to 85% extraction in the PEG6000-salt system in 3 minutes.

Enhanced visible light sensitized photoreaction by mixed phase titania nanotubes

Rangasamy Savitha et al.

Summary: In this study, mixed crystalline TiO2 nanotubes (TiNT) were synthesized using a rapid breakdown anodization process and were applied in the visible light photocatalytic degradation of a dye pollutant. Different crystalline phases of the nanotubes were achieved by tuning the amount of perchlorate ions during thermal annealing. The TiNT with higher rutile content exhibited lower bandgap and surface area, but showed promising degradation of the dye pollutant under visible light compared to commercial TiO2.

Hydrodynamics of aqueous two-phase systems (ATPS) in millichannels

Vamsi Vikram Gande et al.

Summary: Aqueous Two-Phase Systems (ATPS) have been widely used for purification, concentration, synthesis, and separation of biomaterials and nanomaterials. The flow pattern in microchannels can be either parallel flow or segmented flow. ATPS have low interfacial tensions, resulting in parallel flows in microchannels at high capillary numbers. Segmented flows in microchannels offer enhanced mixing. This study demonstrates the reduction of capillary number to low levels using a milli-channel and investigates the different flow patterns of ATPS.

Continuous citrate-capped gold nanoparticle synthesis in a two-phase flow reactor

Spyridon Damilos et al.

Summary: A continuous manufacturing platform was developed for the synthesis of 10-20 nm aqueous colloidal gold nanoparticles using a flow reactor, demonstrating stability and reproducibility over time. The use of a twophase flow system and a hydrophobic membrane separator enabled successful separation of phases and improved process yield. This study addressed challenges in translating batch synthesis to flow and provided tools for the development of a continuous manufacturing platform for gold nanoparticles.

Continuous synthesis of copper nanoparticles using a polyol process in a milli-channel reactor

Vamsi Vikram Gande et al.

Summary: This study compared batch and continuous synthesis methods for stable zero valent copper nanoparticles using a polyol process without an inert atmosphere. The results showed that nanoparticles synthesized continuously had better Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) peaks and stability for up to 10 days, with shorter residence times needed in the continuous process compared to the batch process.
