Extension of the eSAFT-VR Mie equation of state from aqueous to non-aqueous electrolyte solutions

Nefeli Novak et al.

Summary: In this study, the eSAFT-VR Mie equation of state is extended to low relative permittivity, non-aqueous solutions. Different relative permittivity relations and approaches for the characteristic diameters are investigated. Results show that a mole fraction based mixing rule for the relative permittivity yields the best extrapolation from aqueous to non-aqueous solutions.

Importance of the Relative Static Permittivity in electrolyte SAFT-VR Mie Equations of State

Pierre J. Walker et al.

Summary: This study examines the influence of relative static permittivity (RSP) in electrolyte equations of state, focusing on aqueous sodium chloride. Different models for RSP and electrostatic terms were used and compared, with RSP models showing a more significant impact. The balance between Born-solvation and Debye-Huckel or Mean-Spherical Approximation terms is important, with RSP models playing a significant role in this balance, especially when they have a dependence on solvent or ion composition.

Rigorous Phase Equilibrium Calculation Methods for Strong Electrolyte Solutions: The Isothermal Flash

Ilias K. Nikolaidis et al.

Summary: New algorithms for vapor-liquid and liquid-liquid equilibrium calculations are proposed in this paper. These algorithms can be used to study mixtures with fully dissociating electrolytes at constant temperature, pressure, and feed phase composition. The algorithms are based on the minimization of Gibbs free energy with the electroneutrality condition as a constraint. The methods developed in this study are applicable to mixtures containing multiple solvents and one or multiple salts, and their performance and technical details are compared and discussed.

Summary: We propose a novel and thermodynamically consistent modification to simulate ionic liquids and conventional salts. The modification includes a parameter adjustment that improves the overall performance. We combine the modified method with a predictive model to calculate phase equilibria and activity coefficients. The modified method outperforms the unmodified method and shows significant improvements in modeling salt solubility in non-aqueous media.

Modeling of Gas Solubility in Aqueous Electrolyte Solutions with the eSAFT-VR Mie Equation of State

Nefeli Novak et al.

Summary: In this work, the eSAFT-VR Mie equation of state is applied to analyze gas solubility in water-methane-salt and water-carbon dioxide-salt mixtures. Various parameterization schemes for gas-ion dispersion energy were pursued, with the fitting approach yielding the lowest average deviation from experimental data. Despite overall deviations, predictive methods showed excellent results in certain cases, such as methane solubility in aqueous NaCl solutions. The model successfully predicted gas solubility in mixed-salt solutions without additional adjustable parameters, showing great potential for gas solubility calculations under salinity.

Vapour-liquid equilibrium for mixed-solvent - strong electrolytes mixtures with EoS/GE models

Andre F. Young et al.

Summary: In this study, the phi-phi approach was used to describe the vapour-liquid equilibrium behavior of mixed-solvent electrolyte solutions through EoS/G(E) type models. The inclusion of activity coefficient information in the Peng-Robinson equation of state, as well as the evaluation of an electrostatic term from the Debye-Hückel Theory, were key aspects of the approach. Analysis of a database containing 57 mixed-solvent-strong electrolyte solutions led to the proposal of a parameter estimation strategy suitable for large data sets.

Andres Gonzalez de Castilla et al.

Summary: By exploring the analogy between the restricted primitive model and capacitor circuits, the study offers an explanation for the blurring of differences between electrolyte theories when treating the salt diameter as a free adjustable parameter, and applies it to develop a modified Pitzer-Debye-Huckel term. This modification allows for the consideration of qualitative effects in the calculation of mean ionic activity coefficients.

Water-Hydrocarbon Phase Equilibria with SAFT-VR Mie Equation of State

Nefeli Novak et al.

Summary: The study investigates the predictive capability of the SAFT-VR Mie equation of state for water-hydrocarbon phase equilibria. The model accurately captures the phase equilibrium topology for different types of hydrocarbons mixed with water, although it struggles to predict pressure changes for longer chain alkanes. Quantitative predictions for water solubility in light hydrocarbons are possible, but the model performs poorly when predicting mutual solubility above the minimum solubility.
