Experimental and numerical study of a compact inline swirler for gas-liquid separation

Francesco Maluta et al.

Summary: The study experimentally measured the liquid mean and fluctuating velocity field, pressure drop, gas-phase distribution, and bubble size distribution in a compact inline swirler for gas-liquid separation, validating the proposed computational approach. It was found that a coupled solution of the Population Balance Equation (PBE) with the flow equations can realistically predict the gas accumulation zone distribution.

Modeling of gas-liquid flow in a rotating packed bed using an Eulerian multi-fluid approach

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: This article proposes an Eulerian multi-fluid approach to simulate the gas-liquid flow in rotating packed beds (RPBs). Three new multiphase drag force models are constructed based on single-phase drag force models for wire mesh packings. The predicted results using the new simulation framework with the new drag force models show good agreement with the experimental data, which demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

3D CFD simulation of the liquid flow in a rotating packed bed with structured wire mesh packing

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study conducted a CFD simulation to investigate the liquid flow characteristics in rotating packed beds, revealing new flow patterns and liquid disintegration modes. The impact of contact angle and rotational speed on characteristic parameters, as well as the interfacial areas between different phases, were analyzed. The wetted packing surface area was found to be always less than the gas-liquid interfacial area, with varying ratios influenced by contact angle, rotational speed, and liquid viscosity.

Two-Phase flow characterization of a rotating packed bed through CFD simulation in OpenFOAM

Roshanak Rabiee et al.

Summary: Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation is an effective tool for studying the flow characteristics of a rotating packed bed (RPB), particularly in large-scale and 3D simulations. The Euler-Euler model is a reliable choice for describing the two-phase flow behavior of RPBs, with its low computational cost and sensitivity to mesh resolution. This study develops a new Euler-Euler model in OpenFOAM to characterize the two-phase flow behavior of RPBs, which is verified and validated using experimental data. The new model demonstrates promising capabilities in accurately predicting hydrodynamic parameters of RPBs.
