Investigation on energy-saving extractive distillation for recovering ethanol and 1,4-dioxane from wastewater

Qingqing Rui et al.

Summary: Energy-saving extractive distillation method is proposed for separating ethanol and 1,4-dioxane from industrial effluent. Ethylene glycol (EG) is chosen as entrainer in direct extractive distillation, and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is used in the indirect extractive distillation (IED) process. Heat integration and heat pump technologies are employed to reduce energy consumption. The IED-DMSO process combined with heat integration achieves the best performance, with significant reductions in total annual cost, energy consumption, CO2 emissions, and entropy generation compared to the IED-EG process.

Multi-objective optimization of the intensified extractive distillation with side-reboiler for the recovery of ethyl acetate and methanol from wastewater

Ao Yang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the recovery of ethyl acetate (EtAC) and methanol (MeOH) from wastewater using three different extractive distillation processes: triple-column ED (TCED), four-column ED (FCED), and energy-intensified TCED with side-reboiler (TCED-SR). The processes are conceptually designed and optimized using multi-objective particle swarm optimization with total annual cost (TAC), CO2 emission, and process route index (PRI) as objectives. TCED-SR provides the best economic and environmental performances, with the lowest TAC and CO2 emission. FCED is recommended in places with strict safety regulations, although it has higher TAC and CO2 emission compared to TCED-SR.

Control of heat-integrated indirect triple-column extractive distillation for separating ternary azeotropic mixture tetrahydrofuran-ethyl acetate-water

Shuangshuang Zhu et al.

Summary: Most of the current research on extractive distillation focuses on direct sequence extractive distillation (DED), while there is limited information on the design and control of indirect sequence extractive distillation (IED). This study examines the control performance of a heat-integrated IED for the separation of tetrahydrofuran (THF)/ethyl acetate (EtAc)/water. Three control strategies (CS 1, CS 2, and CS 3) are developed and compared, with CS 3 showing the best ability to maintain the purity of all three products close to the desired specification, even under feed flow and composition disturbances.

Design and Optimization of Hybrid Reactive-Extractive Distillation for Ternary Azeotropic Separation: A Case Considering the Effect of Side Reactions

Zong Yang Kong et al.

Summary: Hybrid reactive-extractive distillation (RED) is a popular method for separating azeotropic mixtures by combining chemical reaction and physical azeotropic separation. However, recent studies have shown that side reactions in the hydration of ethylene oxide to form ethylene glycol can significantly increase the total energy consumption and total annual cost (TAC) of RED. These increases are attributed to larger column size, low operating pressure, and expensive cooling refrigerant. It is important for future RED studies to consider the potential side reactions.

Towards sustainable separation of the ternary azeotropic mixture based on the intensified reactive-extractive distillation configurations and multi-objective particle swarm optimization

Ao Yang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a novel approach for the separation of ethanol/tert-butanol/water ternary azeotropic mixture. Two processes, double-column reactive-extractive distillation (DCRED) and reactive-extractive dividing wall column (REDWC), are developed using kinetic and thermodynamic analysis and optimized with a multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm. The evaluation based on cost, emissions, and efficiency shows that both processes have significant improvements compared to the conventional method.

Yasen Dai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of different entrainers on the separation process of ternary mixtures in extractive distillation. The results show that the selection of entrainers should not solely rely on relative volatility and should consider thermodynamic properties and possible thermal integration schemes. The study provides insights for the screening of entrainers and process design in extractive distillation processes.
