A graspable olfactory display for virtual reality

Simon Niedenthal et al.

Summary: The development of a compact and low-cost olfactory display for virtual reality systems has the potential to enhance the olfactory experience in virtual environments. Through user studies and gas sensor analysis, the researchers have shown the clear and consistent output of the device, as well as its intuitive usability and support for gameplay interaction. A virtual wine tasting game served as a demonstration of the device's capabilities in recreating an olfactory experience and facilitating training and gameplay interactions.

Neurons, Nose, and Neurodegenerative Diseases: Olfactory Function and Cognitive Impairment

Irene Fatuzzo et al.

Summary: Olfactory capacity decline is associated with aging and may indicate the early stages of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease. Understanding the role of olfaction in these diseases is of great interest to scientists. Olfactory impairment could potentially serve as an early marker for neurodegenerative diseases, but further research is needed to fully understand the underlying mechanisms.

Sensory Evaluation of Interference Suppression in Odor Reproduction Using Mass Spectrometry

Dani Prasetyawan et al.

Summary: Odor sensing is essential for humans in daily life, but the presence of fixatives in odorant samples can cause interference in odorant analysis. In this study, independent component analysis (ICA) was utilized to remove the influence of fixatives and extract the pure odor mass spectrum. The results showed that ICA successfully eliminated the interference of fixatives and allowed for accurate odorant analysis.

Exploration of sensing data to realize intended odor impression using mass spectrum of odor mixture

Daisuke Hasebe et al.

Summary: Recently, researchers have associated olfactory information on odorants with their corresponding molecular features. They have obtained such information by predicting sensory test evaluation scores from molecular structure parameters or sensing data. Additionally, a method of predicting molecular features corresponding to odor impressions has been developed. By using a machine-learning-based odor predictive model, researchers are able to explore the sensing data space mathematically.

Odor Recorder Based on an Array of QCM Sensors Using Frequency Shifts and Resistance Changes of Multiple Harmonics

Nanxin Gong et al.

Summary: This study introduced an odor recorder based on a quartz crystal microbalance sensor array, which could quantify the concentration recipe of an odor mixture. By measuring both the resonant frequency shifts and resistance changes of multiple harmonics, the selectivity of the sensor array was improved. The experimental results showed that this method reduced the error and convergence time.

Smart Electronic Nose Enabled by an All-Feature Olfactory Algorithm

Cong Fang et al.

Summary: An electronic nose utilizing an all-feature olfactory algorithm is proposed, which mimics human olfaction and improves odor recognition performance by utilizing all features in gas sensing cycles. The method combines deep learning techniques, including convolutional and recurrent neural networks as well as attention mechanisms, to fully capture global and dynamic information. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed approach compared to state-of-the-art methods on Chinese liquor data, and ablation studies provide insights into the contribution of each sensor in odor recognition.
